"There is still time to take a decision," Singh said when asked whether his government will consider BJP's proposal to confer the country's highest civilian award on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Senior BJP leader L K Advani had written to Singh proposing Vajpayee's name for Bharat Ratna, which triggered proposals from almost all political parties.
Besides Vajpayee, the names of political leaders Jyoti Basu, Kanshiram, Jagjivan Ram, M Karunanidhi, Karpoori Thakur, 19th century social reformer Jyotibha Phule and singer Mohammad Rafi have been proposed for the coveted award.

It is a pity that upholding their narrow, selfish interests, Indian political parties are entering into a rat race for recommending every Tom,Dick and Harry for the award of the prestigious Bharat Ratna, thus lowering the sanctity and honour of the coveted Bharat Ratna. While the political parties are forgetting that any honour or award is neither given nor claimed, it should come on its own in conssonance with the suitability, capability and competence of the individual. After all, it is not the monoply of the politicians to claim Bharat Ratna when most deserving, true Indians like Ratan Tata are not even talked about for the award of Bharat Ratna. Will political parties please amend their mindset.
No one is more 'suitable' for Bharat Ratna than our prince in waiting Rahul Gandhi. Why no congress man/woman is 'demanding' this and demonstrate their loyalty ?
