Stop aiding Myanmar: Pro-democracy

Kolkata, February 5 India-based Burmese Democratic Forces (IBBDF) criticised the Government of India for establishing a close relationship with Myanmar’s military junta at a press conference here today.

The IBBDF also demanded that India should not invest in Myanmar’s oil and gas sector.

Pointing to the “prolonged incarceration” of Myanmarese nationals in Indian jails, IBBDF spokesperson, M Kim, said: “It’s been 10 years since 34 Burmese freedom fighters were arrested in Andaman Island and they are still languishing in jail here.”

They were arrested by a corrupt Indian intelligence officer, Lt-Col Garewal, who betrayed his own country and was, in fact, responsible for the death of six others, he alleged. Kim demanded political prisoners status for the inmates.

Raising similar demands, Sujato Bhadro, activist, Association for Protection of Democratic Rights, an NGO, who is also a supporter of the group, said India should take strong initiatives for the restoration of democracy in Myanmar.

She added that India should stop all inter-state commercial relationships with the military junta, including arms sales.

Despite being the world’s largest democracy, Kim said, India has failed to support the democratic aspirations of the people of Myanmar.

India revised its pre-1990 policy of active support to Myanmar’s democratic movement, but strove to establish a close relationship with the military junta since 1994, he added.
