Mumbai, February 22: Dubbing the auctioning of cricketers by the BCCI-promoted Indian Premier League as "a gambling game of industrialists" Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray on Friday asked the Cricket Board President Sharad Pawar to stop it.

In an open letter to Pawar published on the front page of Friday's edition of Sena mouthpiece Samana, Thackrey said such open display of wealth does not augur well for the Indian cricket where players are being auctioned for money.

He said the whole thing has started only to checkmate Indian Cricket League (ICL), the rebel league promoted by Subhash Chandra-led Essel Group.

The auction of over 60 players, including those from other Test playing countries, was held here on Wednesday.

"Oh Pawar, what is happening in the realm of cricket?", said the Sena chief, who is the newspaper's editor.

"These industrialists are throwing money in your cricket field as a result of which cricket is getting corrupt.

"Cricketers are being purchased as a result this their concentration will not be in the game and the sport will decline in this country," he warned.

"If this is how industrialists wield their money then a day will come when there will be no need of government because it will be the industrialists who will call the shots and run the country," Thackeray said.

"Stop this gambling of industrialists and save cricket.

You (Pawar) have the guts to do it, don't you?" the letter added.

Stop cricket auction by Rav Balky on 24 Feb 2008

I think IPL will reduce the professsionalism aspect of cricket - people like Tiwary, Praveen Kumar, by virtue of Hindi speaking origin get 400k plus dollars when they have not played a dinkum of cricket It is a shame in capitalism that unproven talent is rewarded in India, just as it is so in India, in every sphere of life

Stop 'gambling game' of cricket auction: Thackeray by NIRMAL on 23 Feb 2008

I am sure Bal Thakrey feels that Industrialists should not be allowed to "buy" cricketers, because that way they will not have money left to "buy" politicians like Bal Thakrey.

All entertainers are commodities, it is good to see them being sold through market forces. We need consumer protection laws to ensure that these commodities come upto standards. by Sportsman on 23 Feb 2008

It is perfectly OK to auction cricketers. All entertainers- cricketers, other sports, actors, actresses- are commodities and their worth is only what they can entertain the public. Hence they should be left to market forces and politicians should not interfere. Who is Thackrey Pawar or Sonia to tell us what we want? Whether it is Sania, Yuvraj's mother or Kapil's grandmother, they have all used and abused media and commercials to get money and or publicity, and public has the right to see them being auctioned bought and sold. It will bring the glory days of gladitors and other Roman arena games when sports was sports and not stupid confining rules back to our times. However, what we need now is a strict legal framework where entertainer's who claim civic rights real human beings have under democracy are controlled, and this legal framework should consider professional entertainers/ sportspeople as market goods, subject to usual consumer rights laws in case they do not come up to standards.
