Exotic street food from all over the country meets at Legends of India, a trendy new restaurant at the bustling Connaught Place. The restaurant combines Old Delhi nostalgia with modern, plush interiors. However, this 120-cover diner goes well beyond the golgappa-bhel puri fare, laying out a spread with railway mutton curry and the famous kathi rolls of Kolkata. At teatime, head here for chai in kulhars or ask for a classical Victorian high tea that offers white tea and fruity flavours. “So many dishes are dying and need to be revived,” says Jiggs Kalra, renowned food consultant who has drafted the menu here. “For instance there are dora, kakori and galauti kebabs of Lucknow and the popular chaat that originated in Delhi and travelled all the way to Benaras, where it is now best done.”

Must-try
A contemporary khumcha feast at Legends of India boasts paranthas and tikkis. There are seven khumchas or counters in the restaurant. While the die-hard chaat addicts may insist there’s nothing to beat a halwai from Chandni Chowk to make that perfect paapri, Legends of India has done a fine job with their hot ’n’ sweet golgappas (Rs 85). As you pore over the menu, do sample Dhagey ke Kebab (Rs 375) or “dental floss kebabs”, as Kalra wittily calls them, and the tender morsels bring in delicate flavours.

The mildly spicy Keema Tehri (Rs 375) is a winsome entrée and the Anglo-Indian recipe of Railway Mutton Curry (Rs 475) with deep-fried potatoes is spicy but just right with spongy Bakarkhani (Rs 65). For dessert, try seb ki kheer (Rs 95) that is refreshing.

Give a miss
The appetisers, with Chollia aur Khumbwali Lahori Seekh (Rs 285) and Tandoori Aloo Paswan (Rs 275), were average, and the seekhs were bland and dry.
