Kolkata, June 13 Students and their guardians staged a protest at the Bethune College on Friday morning, when the students were not allowed to appear in an examination.

Nearly 30 students were denied from taking the entrance test for the English Honours course, as they were not carrying the admit card of the Higher Secondary examination and the payment receipt of the entrance exam fee.

"We had already notified that the students will have to carry the requisite documents. It was also put up on the college website," said Manimala Das, the principal of the college. "Except a few, all students knew about it," she said.

According to the college authorities, of the 878 students who had applied for the exam, 772 appeared for the test today.

"We were never informed about the requirement to carry documents. This information was not on the website also and since the forms were submitted online, we never knew what was on the college notice board," said Vinod Gupta, father of Suruchi Gupta, a candidate.

"After the exam was over, we tried to meet the principal, but we were not allowed," Vinod Gupta said. Suruchi had come all the way from Malda to appear for the test.

The authorities said that they would consider the matter and if they decide to hold another exam, the information would be duly put on the website. The Bethune College is one the popular destinations for those pursuing the undergraduate course in English. It conducted entrance examination for 33 seats for the English course this year.
