Kolkata, April 4 Following Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi’s intervention, the stalemate at the Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) may soon be over.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, N R Banerjee, the students have agreed to join the classes from next week.

Banerjee today met Gandhi, who is also the chancellor of the University, in an attempt to restore normalcy in the varsity.

“I met Gandhi at 3.30 pm and discussed the matter with him. In the evening, he called me up. He appealed to the students to start classes and to end their relay hungerstrike,” said Banerjee.

He added: “If they don’t do so from Monday, the academic session will be cancelled.”

Meanwhile, BESU Teachers’ Association (BESUTA), armed with a referendum against the V-C, also met Gandhi. “The Chancellor said that he is keeping a close watch on the situation,” said BESUTA president, Sugata Pal.
