Subhas meets members of bus syndicate

Kolkata, April 6 Two days after the Kestopur road mishap, which killed 21 people, state transport minister Subhas Chakraborty met the representatives of the Bengal Bus Syndicate on Sunday.

Downplaying the importance of the meeting, Chakraborty described it as “informal”. He added the next meeting will be held at Netaji Indoor Stadium on April 11.

“We discussed Friday’s accident and the possible ways to prevent such incidents in the future,” said Swarnakamal Saha, a syndicate member.

Imposition of fines for rash driving was one of the measures discussed, he added, hoping that monetary penalties on bus drivers and not the proprietors will cut down incidents of reckless driving. “The authorities could look into this proposal on a trial basis to check its efficacy,” he said.

Dum Dum MP Amitava Nandi said: “Vehicular movement should be controlled to prevent such accidents. We are discussing the issue with concerned authorities to identify solutions.”

Rajarhat-Gopalpur municipality officials have indicated they will soon hold a meeting with public works department (PWD) officials and North 24 Parganas police to discuss ways to improve the traffic situation on the VIP Road.

“It has been decided that railings will be put in place in that particular stretch,” said Rajarhat-Gopalpur municipality Chairman Tapas Chatterjee. The PWD will soon start work to set up a flyover from Dum Dum Park to Baguiati Joramandir on VIP Road. “The plan has been sanctioned and work will start soon. The authorities will also set up service roads,” Chatterjee said.

All small vehicles going to Airport and Ultadanga will use this flyover, avoiding traffic at Baguiati and Kestopur.

Kestopur driver sent to 14-day judicial custody
Swapan Sarkar, the driver of the ill-fated bus that was involved in the road mishap, killing 21 people on Friday, was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days on Sunday. He was arrested from Dum Dum on Saturday where he had been hiding since the accident.
