Mumbai Commander Firdaus Mogul of submarine INS Shankush was swept away to sea while he valiantly tried to save his colleague from the same fate during a naval exercise off Mumbai's coast on Monday morning.

Around 8.30 am, submarine INS Shankush was on preparing for an exercise 60 nautical miles off Mumbai's coast. Minutes before it dived underwater, a crew member came up to the deck for work. He was caught off guard as the submarine went below at that precise moment.

Seeing his colleague battle the waves, Firdaus – the executive officer of the submarine – rushed up to give him a hand.

He was washed to sea too.

Sources said Firdaus Mogul was also injured trying to save the crew member.

Naval officers and coastguards scoured the waters in helicopters soon after the accident. While the crew member lived, Firdaus' body was recovered some time later.

India lost a good soldier because of miscommunication or lets say attitude. Firdaus was my friend a father of a toddler a son and a husband. How can we go one like this?
