New Delhi Soon after he surrendered before a Delhi court on Saturday and was sent to jail to serve his three-year sentence in the 1993 telecom scam, former Union minister Sukh Ram had to be rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. Doctors said Sukh Ram was brought with complaints of breathlessness, and had been admitted primarily for observation purposes.

“Sukh Ram’s condition appears to be stable, and we are likely to discharge him on Monday. In the last 24 hours all his vitals have been normal,” said a senior doctor at the hospital.

Tihar Jail officials confirmed that the 86-year-old was sent to hospital on the advice of jail doctors. “Since he has a history of multiple health problems, and considering his age, our doctors said we should shift him to DDU, the first referral hospital for prison inmates,” said Deputy Inspector General of Tihar Prisons R N Sharma.

Sukh Ram’s counsel had told the SC that he was unable to surrender before the trial court as he was “in a coma”.

Doctors at Metro Heart Institute, where he was admitted on December 31 with chest pain complaints, however, clarified that he was “never in a coma”, and that his condition was stable. The SC is likely to hear his bail plea on Monday.
