Former Union Communications Minister Sukhram was convicted by a Delhi Court for amassing Rs 4.25 crore of disproportionate assets that included seizure of Rs 2.45 crore from his residence in New Delhi.

Special CBI Judge V K Maheshwari held the 82-year-old politician from Himachal Pradesh guilty under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The quantum of sentence against the former MP would be pronounced on February 24. The maximum sentence for the offences he is convicted for is seven years.

According to the CBI, Sukhram allegedly amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income to the tune of more than Rs 5 crore between 1991 and 1996.

The CBI registered the case against the minister on August 27, 1996 under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The agency had conducted a raid at his residences in New Delhi and in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, in 1996 and recovered Rs 36.2 million in loose change.

According to the probe agency, at the time of the raid, wads of notes tumbled out of every corner including the toilet tanks, trunks, pillow covers in Sukhram's house.

SUKHRAM'S ILLGOTTEN WEALTH by Niranjan on 21 Feb 2009

BUT DOES HE GET TO KEEP THE CRORES THAT HE ILLEGALLY AMASSED! IF SO THEN HE WILL USE THOSE CRORES TO GET OFF SCOTT FREE. ACTUALLY, ALL AND I MEAN ALL HIS ASSETS SHOULD BE SIEZED AND HE SHOULD BE THROWN ON THE STREETS. BUT WILL THE NETAs ALLOW SUCH A THING TO HAPPEN? THERE WILL BE APPEALS AND APPEALS AND ULTIMATELY, QUIETLY HE WILL BE LET OFF AND HIS CRORES RESTORED TO HIM AND HE WILL LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

Cheap crook by Hero Vaz on 21 Feb 2009

Sukhram is a cheap crook who became a minister by accident. He has not a single contribution to his credit. For having such a member, the Congress Party owes a public explanation.

Common Man is not Common by vishal on 20 Feb 2009

He is one of those cases where Congress has abandoned them and considered useless otherwise why can't they convict Mulayam Singh Yadav , Mayawati Lalu prasad Yadav , Sharad Pawar and as someone mentioned that inspite of having all incrimanating evidence it took decade to give the verdict. Don;t you think its TIME TO CHANGE make these Few Indians accountable for what they have been doing???

Sukhram by Prashant on 20 Feb 2009

And this is the man from whom BJP took help to topple Congress in Himachal Pradesh. How will BJP spokesperson now justify their decision? It is proved with this judgment that BJP is a 'Sandhisadhu' party which will take advantage of criminals to gain power and then will dump them without being even ashamed.

CHALTA HAI BHAI. INDIA HAI. by MANOJ KARWANDE on 20 Feb 2009

I clearly remember this case. This happened 14 years ago. That time he took bribes of 5 cr. In today's worth it is more than 25 cr. It took so long for the justice to arrive. Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied. What about the hoardes of ministers in central and various state govts. who have made the life of their next 10 generations easy. Recently the UPA govt. backtracked on the case of disproportionate assets of Mulayam. How is it possible for Amar Singh to give premium imported car as a gift to Amitabh ? Has everybody forgotten the Taj Corridor case against Mayawati ? Anyway, elections are round the corner, and everybody will queue up to have a drop of ink on their nail.

Sukh Ram by Surajit Sinha on 20 Feb 2009

Since politicicans main duty is to make money, we should make compulsory that below poverty line people should only contest elections so that every 5 years we have 5oo millionaires in India. Since politicians do not do any work so the people below poverty line can do the job efficiently like they do.

Corrupt politicians by Chandrakant Marathe on 20 Feb 2009

In classical music certain things cannot be explained but can only be felt emotionaly while listening a concert, similarly corruption by many of our known and respected politicians is evident to every one but cannot be proved and presented in a court. Or else how can on justify our politicians without working anywhere have acres of land, a fleet of cars, cash to buy MLAs and MPs, make foreign trips, and so on. We the people still vote for these goondas, corrupt candidates. We have to conciously distinguish amongst the candidates and vote to get relativly better rulers.

How about UPA looters ???? by R.S.RAJAN on 20 Feb 2009

Congress and UPA are corrupt to core- so are their allies like Karunanidhi, Sharad Pawar, Lalu Yadav,Mulla Ayam Yadav,Amar Singh,Paswan,Karats and Bardans of the left. In a nut shell, UPA's performance over these years can be simply summarised as " Corruption Surpassed- Corruption par excellence". Vox Populi Vox Dei- Yatha Raja Thatha Praja.
