Chandigarh, May 05 Sale of the fruit is up this summer and vendors expect double the business as compared to last year

WaterMelon, the refreshing summer fruit with lots of water content minus fattening elements, is the hot buy this season. Roadside vendors are doing brisk sales and expect double the business in comparison to that in the last three years.

People prefer the fruit because it is 92 percent water by weight, the highest percentage for any fruit. Being properly hydrated during the scorching summer months is vital and a diet high in water content can contribute to daily fluid requirements.

Vendors said the average sale of watermelons this time is about 400 kgs per day, almost double the demand in the last three years. “We used to sell about 200 kgs of the fruit in a day. This time though, there seems to be a major craving for the fruit among people,” Sant lal, a fruit vendor said.

People thronging around fruit vendors for purchasing watermelons is a common sight on summer evenings. “There is nothing like a juicy slice of watermelon on a hot summer day! Not only is the fruit a highly refreshing summer treat, it is also rich in nutrition and water,” said Rohit while purchasing watermelons from Sector 19.

“A two-cup serving of watermelon contains only 100 calories and is low in fat. Because of its high water content, it is highly filling. Also, being low in calories and fat, even people watching their waists can afford to dig in,” said Archana, a resident.
