Chennai, April 15: Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday named a 17-member squad for their opening fixture on April 19 against Kings XI Punjab at Mohali in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket tournament.

Former India Test bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji has been omitted on fitness grounds while South African stars Makhaya Ntini and Albie Morkel would miss the tie as they are playing in their domestic Pro 20 tournament at that time.

The team management said an additional member has been added to cover in case of injury to any player.

“Both Ntini and Morkel will join the team on April 26.

Basically, we want a cover in case any player is injured. We don’t want to take any chances on this. Therefore we have one additional player in the team,” said V B Chandrasekhar, Director of cricketing matters of team.

The South African duo will be in time to play Super Kings’ second home game against Sourav Ganguly-led Kolkata Knight Riders after missing their first home tie against Mumbai Indians on Apr 23.

The squad has five foreign recruits in Stephen Fleming and Jacob Oram of New Zealand, Michael Hussey and Matthew Hayden of Australia and Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan.

The Team: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain), Stephen Fleming Jacob Oram, Michael Hussey, Matthew Hayden, Muttiah Muralitharan, Suresh Raina, Parthiv Patel, Joginder Sharma, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan, Anirudha Srikkanth, R Ashwin, P Amarnath, Shadab Jakati, Arun Karthik, S Badrinath and Manpreet Gony.
