New Delhi, March 2: Defending Afzal Guru, Arundhati Roy said that the Supreme Court’s ruling which says that Afzal Guru must be hanged ‘to satisfy the collective will of the nation’ although there is no proof of his involvement is in itself unconstitutional.

She was speaking in Delhi on a debate organized by the Urdu Press Club on the topic ‘Terrorism and Fascism: two sides of the same coin’.

She also said that international forces like America are involved in projecting Muslims as the new enemy of the world. There is politics behind this move; Ms Roy said that 70% of America’s economy depends on its defence industry. In such a scenario America needs new enemies and wars to sustain its economy.

Other speakers on this issue included Parliament attack accused (and subsequently acquitted) SAR Geelani and journalist Manoj Raghuvanshi among others. The keynote address was delivered by anti-fascist activist, author and historian Amaresh Mishra.

Mr Amaresh Mishra said that in a new trend in Indian politics, fascist forces like the Sangh Parivar create the bogey of terrorism to gain political mileage. He also said that it seems that the fascist forces with a clear anti-Muslim agenda and since the Indian constitution is secular and guarantees equality before law, an anti-Muslim agenda goes against the spirit of the Indian constitution and thereby the Indian nation.

While SAR Geelani said that the Indian system was forcing people to take up the gun, Manoj Raghuvanshi rebutted him by saying that by that logic even Hindus who have been killed by terrorists should do so. He reiterated his stand that for permanent peace between the two communities the concept of jehad should not be taught to the youth.
