Kolkata, April 18 The Calcutta University Senate has decided that Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the university Suranjan Das will be the next Vice-Chancellor of the university.

The highest decision-making body of the university has unanimously backed the candidature of Das. Earlier, the senate had decided to extend the tenure of Asis Banerjee, the present Vice-Chancellor, by another year. However, Banerjee has expressed his unwillingness to continue in the post.

Suranjan Das (54), a D Phil from Oxford University, has been associated with the university for the last 37 years.

The university will officially send his name to Chancellor of the university Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi. According to senate members, the entire process will take about a month’s time.

Besides being the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university for the past six years, Das also has experience as a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and a member of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

On the issue of some members in the senate backing candidates with science and technology background, Das said that it is a misconception that only individuals from science and technology background can take up the issue of science.

Das said, “The university will go for public-private partnership models but this will not mean the university education will be commercialised. We can go for the public-private partnership models for research and development,” he said.
