Kolkata, February 12 Police picked up a suspected top Maoist leader from a house at Sonachura in Nandigram today.

Mithu Ghosh (42) allegedly belongs to a Maoist faction touring Nandigram to propagate its ideology.

According to the police, Ghosh is an ideologue of the CPI (Maoist).

Maoist documents, including books, pamphlets and maps, were found in his possession.

Superintendent of Police (East Midnapore) S S Panda said: “Based on a tip-off, we kept Ghosh under watch for a while and picked him up today. We are looking into his links with various subversive elements in the state. The details will be revealed only after we complete his interrogation.”

Ghosh has been staying in Nandigram for the last one week. On Tuesday morning, police raided the house of one Sudhansu Jana at Sonachura and arrested Ghosh.

According to the police, Ghosh is a resident of Kanungo Chowk in Jhargram, West Midnapore. He passed his secondary examination in 1982 with good marks. He also did well in the high secondary examination. Later, he became involved in ultra-Left politics.

Maoists are actively propagating their ideology in Nandigram, said police.

“They are speaking to locals and taking shelter in their houses. They talk to the residents about the SEZ, government policies and their philosophy. They are trying to indoctrinate the people,” said a police officer in Nandigram.
