Kolkata, August 16 Panic gripped Malda on Saturday after an unidentified plastic bag with wires jutting out was spotted at a handicrafts fair.

Locals spotted the abandoned bag near the District Sports Authority Grounds where the fair is being held around 10 am and immediately informed the police.

A large contingent of policemen arrived at the spot and cordoned off the area. A bomb squad has also been called from Siliguri.

“Primarily it seems as a bomb with a timer. We have called in the bomb disposal squad and have detained a local person,” said Satyajit Bandopadhyay, district superintendent of police.

According to locals, the detained person was spotted keeping the bag near the fair ground.

On August 4, a sophisticated bomb and timer was recovered from Biharitolla in Malda.
