The Australians were not their usual aggressive self, which was noticeable by their not-so-convincing appealing in the match.
The wicket-keeper batsman said the massive public outcry after the Sydney game was uncalled for.
"No one told us to walk out there and settle down and become friendly on the field, (but) may be subconsciously guys were a bit more aware of all the hysteria that was created, which I will happily go on the record and say, I think was way over the top," Gilchrist was quoted as saying in The Age on Thursday.
However, Gilchrist, echoing the views of pace spearhead Brett Lee, asserted that they should not be held responsible for the acrimony that marred the second Test.
"Did we start the race riots that happened in Cronulla? No. We won a game of cricket," he said.
Lee has said the nail-biting finish to the Test had added to the furore and the Australian side's behaviour had nothing to do with the acrimony.

Australians stopped the sledging they lost. Cry babies. It due this sledging they won all these 16 tests. They have systematically obliterated the opposition to smitherens in this sledging and the opposition was was afraid of playing in Australia. Even a great bowler like Muralidharan was intimidated. God knows how many times Austalians were out and they were not given as they were agressive towards the umpairs also. This explains the winning streak.
all these statements that come out of the australian cricket team confirms that aussies cannot handle defeat and they are very poor losers.
We are not used to losing like India all the time. Poor losers? We wouldn't know, perhaps Indians could describe what it's like to lose all the time.
ICC should ban sledging, in which Australian cricketers excels, and give a level playing field to all countries. If they still continue to win they are true champions
I agree. And racists should be equally banned from cricket. Or is that only allowed for Indian cricketers?
every rise should follow a fall so do the oz's
Boo Hoo... cry babies. India kicked your sorry behinds... thats a fact! The Ozzies don't have one bone in their body that can be called "sporting". If Howard was still the PM he would have joined in defending his cricket team. It is the players, the media and even the government that encourages bullying, sledging, and even cheating. I am almost certain that Bucknor had been paid off. ICC would have never agreed to what the Indians said, it is not in their blood to do that. The Indians probably had some evidence pointing to Bucknor's guilt. Mike Proctor is a racist sack of S.H.I.T... pardon my french.
Why can't the Australians simply admit that they were out-played at Perth by a side that played better cricket. All their defensiveness on the Perth defeat and their unsporting behaviour at Sydney hihlights that the reason they win is their bully attitude and not their competence / capability as players. The Australian media is hand in glove with these tactics of the Team.
Hmmm...slowly and surely, the statements are coming one by one from arrogant Aussies. They (including Mr Lee
Adam Gilchrist still is and will always be the greatest wicket keeper batsman ever to have played cricket and has earned the respect of all for his honest ways on and off the green.Nevertheless, to claim that things at Sydney were rather way over the top infact is a preposterous statement. When its a question of racial abuse, things are likely to get serious and if they mistook it to pass off as just one of their sissy OZ ploy, they were wrong. What does the CHURCH, (as gilly's known) has to say bout Michael Clarke, who stood his ground even after edging the ball off Kumble, i feel that was ridiculous and a major embarrasment to the spirit of the game. The OZs are infact lucky for their skin is white, this allegation if proved wrong at the ICC, would reflect the dirtiest ever ploy adopted by a team known to be the Champion.I believe, if the ICC finds bajji not guilty, there shoud be rigid steps taken to chastise the OZ's for such a wrongful allegation and most importantly bringing the game to disrepute in the name of racism.
