"Any speech supporting the banned outfits or propagating their ideals is a crime under the Unlawful Prevention Act and legal action will be taken against those who indulge in such acts," Law Minister Duraimurugan told the assembly on Wednesday, without making a direct reference to the LTTE.
His statement assumes significance in the wake of the Congress' demand for the arrest of Thol Tirumavalavan, leader of the Viduthalai Chiruthigal Katchi (VCK), another DMK ally, for his speech at a public meeting recently, seeking revocation of the ban on Tamil Tigers.
On Tuesday, Congress members walked out of the house, dissatisfied with the explanation offered by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on the LTTE issue.
The DMK is 22 seats short of a simple majority in the 234-member house. The Congress, which has 35 members, is extending outside support to the government.
Making a suo motu statement in the house on Wednesday, Duraimurugan said a high-level meeting, headed by the Chief Minister, was held at the Secretariat in Chennai which was also attended by Finance minister K Anbazhagan, Advocate General M Masilamani, Chief Secretary L K Tripathy and other top civil and police officials.
The meeting discussed the possibilities of bringing a new legislation to prevent the activities of supporters of banned outfits, but it was decided that the action would be taken against those who supported such organisations under the Unlawful Prevention act, he said.
Karunanidhi, in response to criticism from Congress members, said on Tuesday that he did not subscribe to Tirumavalavan's views and that it was a mistake on latter's part to criticise the Congress and AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa.
But at the same time the Chief Minister quoted a Supreme Court judgement on a POTA case, saying a person could not be arrested for merely speaking in support of a banned organisation.
Karunanidhi had said he was even prepared to enact a law on the advice of legal experts to stop the activities of LTTE supporters.

Do you all GUYS know to what paper you are writing. To summarize, whatever Tamils do is wrong, at least, according to this paper, and the readers. Probably, we would take some action if it involves some x, y, z, or some NorthIndians, at Fiji or elsewhere in Timbaktoo. Then the whole country would erupt and call that it is against the HINDUS. But when Tamilinas are killed they are just Tamilians and NOT HINDUS. Hippocrates!!!! to the Core!!! This is the supprot we get from our NorthIndian Brothern...Shame ON YOU!!!
Congress is anti-Tamil, anti-Hindu. Tamils can be killed and ethnically cleansed, Kashmiri hindus can be killed and ethnically cleansed, Malay Hindus can be persecuted, Bangladesi/Pakistani Hindus can be killed and ethnically cleansed. They are cheap souls, their life carries no value. Congress party always worked against Hindus, since the days of MK Gandhi and speed-up by Nehru. We HIndus (non-Tamils/Tamils) fully support our Hindu brethens in Sri Lanka. DMK must support Sri Lankan Tamils, as all other Tamil parties are anti-Sri Lankan Tamils.
Oh well, it is time to open up investigation in to the hundreds of deaths of tamils there by IPKF, and start a judicial inquiry into that matter, and also bring in the congress leaders who are responsible for those deaths. What do you say now ? Shall we challenge each other ?
Not being Tamil it is difficult for many Indians to understand the politics of Tamilnadu but one thing is very clear that Sri Lankan army is butchering the poor and marginal Tamils of Sri Lanka and hence it is ethically and morally correct to support the Tamils of Sri Lanka. More so because most of them are Hindus and if Hindus anywhere in the world face serious problems, India should offer all possible and even impossible help and succour. If Indian community suffers due to political strife in Kenya, Narendra Modi writes to PM and if hundreds of Tamils are killed in Sri Lanka why should DMK or AIDMK or PMK or any other Tamil party keep shut.
Indian Tamils should not interfere inthe other country's internal affairs and hence to keep aloof. We are engaged with our own problems .Be neutral .Why to have new headaches. We lost great leaders due to enimity of politicians.
It is too well known that the DMK is covertly supporting the LTTE and its activists are helping the LTTE cadres in the State in various ways. Karunanidhi's show of opposition to LTTE is only to stay in power in the State with the support of the Congress party. The moment the Congress party withdraws its support the DMK Government would fall. Besides, in order to remain as a coalition partner in the UPA and enjoying power the DMK dare not oppose the Congress party by supporting the LTTE, the killers of Rajiv Gandhi.
I agree with DMK on this subject and demand to arrest Jayalalita for her openly support to banned organisation.
