Jalandhar, January 16: While urging the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take up the issue of ban on wearing turban in France with the French President Nicholas Sarkozy during the proposed visit of the later on Republic Day, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday revealed that MPs of SAD has already written a letter to the Prime Minister to seek an appointment with the visiting President on the issue.

Since Prime Minister himself is a Sikh, he should strongly take up the issue of ban on turban in France with French President to resolve it, Badal said in Jalandhar on Wednesday adding that party MP and former union minister S S Dhindsa has already written a letter to Prime Minister to seek an appointment with Sarkozy, so that delegation of SAD MPs could meet him to make him understand the sanctity of turban to a Sikh.

Although the SAD was raising the issue of ban since from its imposition, but still on the international issues, states have some limitation due to protocol decorum, Badal said adding that the issue could be discuss the French authorities only through the intervention of union government.

Badal on Wednesday reiterated his demand of redefining the Centre-state relations and said that now the time was ripe so that the states should be given more financial autonomy.

Justifying the state government’s demand to name the proposed International Airport at Mohali on the name of Shahid-e-azam Bhagat Singh, Badal said there should not be any hitch to name the proposed international airport on the great freedom fighter, as Bhagat Singh does not only belong to Punjab, but to whole country.
