Taking IPL out of India painful: Lalit Modi

New Delhi It is 'painful' to shift the Indian Premier League from India but with 'hands tied' they had no option except for relocating the tournament, says the Commissioner and Chairman of the cash-rich event, Lalit Modi.

"I personally worked so hard over so many years to build the IPL here and to me it's very painful to see this. But it would have been more painful for us not to have the tournament at all. So we had to take one decision or other," Modi said.

"We tried very very hard to keep the tournament in India. We had multiple venues, multiple dates. We tried everything in the book to keep it here but our hands got tied and we were pushed to the wall. We had no choice but to move it out," Modi, also a BCCI vice president, added.

Modi was disappointed by the response of the states and the conditions they put on holding the event.

"It is unfortunate that some states have decided to pull out and they are crucial states. Maharashtra for example is a crucial state for us. We had 18 games planned in Maharashtra.

"We were ready to look at it and even changing the games from certain days to after the polls but to move the games totally after 13th of May, that is what Maharashtra has indicated to us, it is just not possible," Modi told a TV news channel.

ipl out of india by Sharon Subair on 31 Jul 2009

ipl shifted to another country was indeed hurting for man, and i was at the strong doubt if it would indeed HAVE THE INDIA SPRIRT.if the s africas would know the pujabi, diliwala, bombay...u know the inian spirit. but things went on quiet well, examples like this just goes to show you that this world is indeed becoming closer and closer and the whole idea of cultural gobalistation is indded very strong, though this has affected us indians in an immotional way........thinking straight w can say the decision was right..

Umpiring IPL games in South Africa by Angara Ravi on 02 Apr 2009

Mr Lalit Modi, We are ICC Qualified Umpires in Botswana a neighbouring country to South Africa requesting you to give us a chance to stand in to Umpire some of the IPL Games. Please let us know if there is any possibility....

SIR by SATYANARAYANA on 24 Mar 2009

WHY TO SHIFT IPL TO OTHER COUNTRY?WHY CANT WE SHIFT THE SHEDULE OF IPL AFTER THE ELECTIONS.?IF THE IPL MATCHES ARE SHIFTED TO OTHER COUNTRY THEN THE IPL CRAZ WILL BE REDUCED.NO AVERAGE PEOPLE CAN GO TO OTHER COUNTRY AND SEE THE IPL MATCHES SO THAT AUTOMATICALLY LOSS WILL OCCUR TO BCC OR THE TEAM BUYERS.

All patriotic Indians must boycott the IPL by Pranab on 24 Mar 2009

This is the height of commercialization. Do all Modis consider themselves above the nation? The elections are the most important thing happening in India, how dare the IPL demand that resources be taken from the elections to support their commercial venture?Put yourself in the shoes of a constable from the Mumbai police, whom you are going to blame if any untoward incident occurs: if you do not listen to his recommendations what right do you have to blame him?The I in IPL stands for India. If it cannot follow Indian sensibilities and common decency towards India, please take it out of here. All Indians should boycott the IPL, which runs on our money. Lalit Modi seems to be a traitor to the national interest, who weighs everything in money and has no place for national pride. His suggestions are despicable, to say the least.

Trator Modi and Company by Philip on 23 Mar 2009

these IPL guys must understand country comes first then criket. i am also a crazy cricket fan but the way mr. modi and company theatening governament by saying he will organise IPL matches outside india. Mr Modi should understand one thing we are more than 100 crores crazy cricket fans in india. he will not find some many cricket fans in other parts of the world.we as indians must show thumbs down to Mr. Modi's IPL if it is orgaanised outside india.

modi and IPL by omar on 23 Mar 2009

IPL shifted away from india is non sense.Indian premier league played outside india? then change the name of the tournament as England Premier League and play in England.IPL if played outside india, we as indians should ban IPL next year in India.Modi to be deported from India for his money mindedness and his true love for making money out of cricket's name.He will repent for his decision in the future.

Lalit is cutting the branch on which he is sitting by Satindar on 23 Mar 2009

IPL Chief Lalit Modi does not realise that he is cutting the branch on which he is sitting.Ultimately it is the Indian cricket fans that really provide the money for IPL.

Chikk hearted government by sanjiv Kr. Singh on 23 Mar 2009

Good Decision!!!!! I did not expect anything positive from this coward present government, why even expect anything from this chik hearted congress? they can't protect the lives of people of India and we expect them to take care of the IPL ?? this is harsh, they must have discussed this issue with the US and must have come to this shameful conclusion. This congress government needs to be thrown out and then only i will be satisfied.Even the ipl and the BCCI are cowards and anti national, if the government denied them security then what was the reason for them to take it out of the country? They have mocked this country by taking the IPL out of India

Modi / Govt / BCCI are Junk by sandyjohn on 23 Mar 2009

I'm not surprised with the decision as we have no guts to provide security to our citizens. Will Shiv Sena,Ram Sene, Bajrang Dal,MNS will take the responsibility to provide security in IPL? I Doubt as they are only "APNI GALLI MEIN KUTTA SHER " type people. All were hiding on and after 26/11. They can't accept this challenge as they are strong and show their power only against poor, girls, helpless people.

Mr. MODI, WE ARE ALSO PAINFUL THAT YOU ARE AN INDIAN by dv.sharma on 23 Mar 2009

The Shrewed combination of Business and Cricket is equal to Mr. MODI. No one should switch-on their TVs and ignore this whole IPL if it's out of India.

IPL Vs Govt by Balasundaram Ramaswamy on 23 Mar 2009

Is your paper not interested in publishing the reactions of Narendra Modi and others as it will hurt the prospects of Congress in the hustings?

What the hell! by Jojo on 23 Mar 2009

Why the hell is IPL being shifted to another country.. they are ready to do all this negotiation etc with other countries and might run into other problems at the eleventh hour. Can they not postpone the event by a month? What is the big deal really, if it is postponed. It is just a game. It happens every year. The elections happen only once in 5 years. IPL bosses are acting like jerks really.

IPL can't be postponed by Prashant on 23 Mar 2009

IPL can't be postponed because after may there is a fixed schedule for all the naitonal and international players. Our countryman may change their schedule but we can't force internaitonal players to cancel their matches because we can't provide the security.

Ask the Srilankans by Jojo on 23 Mar 2009

Well, did the Srilankans not abandon their tour to Pakistan after the incident? Are the 'dates' more important than the perceived security threat? It is quite possible that the govts know (although not declaring it openly in the media) that there are threats to the games/players. And obviously hosting a number of events at the same time is a big trouble, we are already thinning ourselves. Why not also hold a few more events just to show off, huh?

IPL by paul on 23 Mar 2009

Admit it mOdi, IPL wants Paki players to play. So you took it outside, and blame on others. And Indian Govt's priority is not IPL it is General elections. and the security forces of this country is not for the service of some private entity full of SNOBS.

ipl by bhupendra on 23 Mar 2009

again Congress has proved thyat they are for Aam Adami and not for mallya, sharukh, zinta, ambani, shilapa, modi, modi, jaitly, who are inyerested in money only.the life of ciyizen is more important than IPL.IPl is not at all connected to Country>they charge for everything from us. a pacca professional.

ANTI NATION ACTIVITY by M K BHATIA on 23 Mar 2009

The dicision of the board is not in the interest of the country. we are having elections which requires deployment of security and also there is treat of terrorists. What IPL will tell to the world- India is unable to provide security hence we have moved out of India. This is a anti nation activity. My request to Players is not to play in IPL. IPl can be held from June 09. First Elections are important for the country. God bless our players with right sense.

IPL by Subramanian on 23 Mar 2009

One should not forget that IPL is a Private affair and Govt. of India has nohting to do with it and as such IPL should not dictate the Indian Government. Any how now it is International Premier Leage. Congrats Mr. Modi

Re: IPL by Milind on 23 Mar 2009

Private or Not, it is Government's job to provide security. Tomorrow, the Government may refuse to provide you security from Thefts / Robberries citing General Election in process. This is the imcompetence of UPA governemnt showing.
