While junior college and school teachers are expected to g on strike only on Tuesday, senior college teachers will be going on an indefinite strike from Tuesday.
Suhas Pednekar, principal, Ramnarain Ruia College, Matunga, said, “The junior college teachers are going only on a one-day strike on Tuesday. The admission work will begin on Wednesday. So I do not think that the strike will disrupt admissions. Regarding senior college professors, we will have to see how it goes. Lectures have already begun.”
Janardan Jangle of the Mumbai Teachers’ Democratic Forum that represents schools and junior colleges said, “We will be observing a token strike on Tuesday, however, we plan to go an indefinite strike from August 4 to protest against the report of the Pay Committee headed by PA Hakeem. We want the sixth pay commission to be implemented as it is, like in the case of central government employees.”
In case of senior college, the National Eligibility Test (NET) and the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) qualification for college teachers will pose a problem for those who were recruited before these were introduced. MFUCTO has also demanded the uniform leave package recommended by the UGC that includes longer maternity leave be implemented for teachers in the state.
Professor C Sadasivan of MFUCTO said, “All teachers, who were appointed between September 1991 and July 4, 2000, have been brought under the NET SLET. However, at the time of their appointment, NET SLET was not mandatory. Hence this should not be made compulsory for all these teachers now and they should be given all benefits.”
He also said that while the state government had implemented the sixth pay commission for all state government employees, college teachers were yet to receive their due, despite the Human Resources Development ministry directing the UGC in December last year to write to state governments and vice chancellors of various universities to immediately implement the sixth pay commission.

teachers strike has been forced on teachers by the state government by not taking seriously the long awaited demands of the teachers. the sixth pay arrears which were expected to be disbursed by march 2009 are still pending and so the salary as per the new scale. as central govt is taking responcibility of the financial burden, it is really unfortunate to find the state govt not taking the decision. it justifies the strike . it is clear that the state govt wants to misuse the huge amount expected from the central govt against the arrears of the teachers. how the teachers will vote the same govt again in the state? they should give a serious thought on this matter, make discussions with the federation leaders and come to a concrete and fruitfull resolution.
