Some 20 inmates have been selected to undertake the one-month course based on their previous qualifications and interest in the course. The course is divided into six modules.
Prof Anil Sarwal, president of the DAV College Teachers’ Union and a linguist by training, has put together the course with the help of MA II year Linguistics students, Deepali, Gita Thapa, Akansha and Aarshdeep. A few research papers on the new approach have been published worldwide, including a recent publication of the Cambridge Scholars Publishing, London.
Gita, a teacher of the course said, “We have fine tuned the materials so that most of the current issues facing the world are touched upon and the learners in the natural process of learning the target language would also have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the challenges facing humanity, whether it be health, use of money, environment protection or the status of women.”
Prof Anil Sarwal informed that the course has been designed on psychological and pedagogic principles, keeping in mind the learner’s previous experiences and linguistic abilities. The contents are so chosen as to enable the learner to function with ease in the fast globalising world. The language exercises are simple and based on the author’s experience. The most commonly used grammatical structures and some keywords and phrases have been included. Some important grammatical points have also been explained at length for ease in understanding and applying the concepts while using the language.
