Kolkata, March 24 A 17-year-old student was refused admission in three state-run hospitals in the city on Monday, sparking allegations of medical negligence.

Sanjoy Barui, a resident of Bankura, writhed in pain as his family and friends rushed him from one hospital to another. He was injured following a fall around 7 am on Sunday.

“I suffered head, neck and spinal cord injuries,” the Class XI student of Madhuban Goenka High School said.

He was first taken to Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital where the doctors referred him to SSKM Hospital.

Sanjoy’s father Joydeb Barui alleged that the Bankura hospital did not have the MRI facilities required for Barui’s treatment.

Around 4.30 pm, Sanjoy was brought to SSKM Hospital but was reportedly left unattended.

“Five hours later, my son was referred to Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital as neither doctors nor beds were available,” Barui said.

At Nil Ratan, the doctors conducted an X-ray on Sanjoy and declared that he had received “no injuries on neck”.

But later, citing unavailability of beds, they referred Sanjoy to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH), said Barui.

“There also he was also denied admission,” he added. The family then once again took Sanjoy at NRSMCH. After passing the night outside the emergency ward, he finally received treatment at the OPD on Monday afternoon.

“We are poor. If we had enough money we would not have taken him to government-run hospitals,” Barui said. NRSMCH Superintendent Lakshmikanto Ghosh, however, said that authorities are yet to receive any complaint of medical negligence from Sanjoy’s family.

“Sanjoy was admitted at the medicine (male) ward around 1.30 pm. He has suffered a spinal cord injury. If required, surgery will be performed on him,” Ghosh said.
