The team, lead by superintendent Naveen Malhotra, had gone to remove the idols of Lord Shiva kept on a platform in the C-Block of the locality.
The team had also summoned area welfare association president Amarjit Singh to ward off any possibility of “hurting the religious sentiments” of the residents. The pandit recited mantras for around 15 minutes, after which he sprinkled holy water on the idols and took them to a nearby temple.
Malhotra said, "No one opposed the move. We wanted to remove encroachments without hurting the religious sentiments of the residents. This idea was the brainchild of our Zonal Commissioner Kuldeep Singh.
Though the violation was in our notice for the last couple of days, we did not know how to go about it."The idols that were lying on the roadside have been handed over to Hakumat Rai Jain, President, Krishna Mandir.Arun Dugga, another superintendent said, "Moreover, the idols were lying in the open on a roadside. This is no way to worship."
The residents have suggested the MC team to follow the same pattern in the other areas of the city, so that encroachments can be removed safely.
Later, the MC team demolished the platform apart from razing 19 sheds constructed by the shopkeepers near Krishna Mandir, who have encroached roughly 15 feet of the land. Meanwhile, the tehbazari team also demolished a few structures on the Gill Road while rehris were removed from the Sherepur Chowk, Cheema Chowk, Partap Bazar and Noorwala Road.
