Mumbai, January 13 After an exceptionally cold November and an erratic December, the city is warming up again. But according to the Met department officials, winter’s not over yet. “On the contrary, winter peaks in January,” said K Sathi Devi, regional director of the Indian Meteorological Department, adding, “the city is experiencing slight warming for the past two days due to an influx of easterlies. These winds blow from the opposite direction and push back the cool sea breeze. As a result, the onset of westerly winds are delayed."

She attributed this pattern of winds to the high daytime temperatures experienced lately. On Sunday, the maximum temperatures in the city were as high as 32.1 degrees Celsius in Colaba and 34.5 degree in Santacruz.

Pointing out that despite the rise in day temperature, the minimum temperatures have managed to remain below normal in the suburbs, Sathi Devi said, “The standard normal temperature for winter is between 16 and 17 degrees Celsius. The suburbs on Sunday reported 16.2 degrees which is not so bad.” She added that winter comes in spells throughout the country — while in northern and central India the weather changes according to ‘western disturbances', in Western India, it relies on 'wind patterns’. In Maharashtra and Konkan regions, the proximity of the sea has a great influence on the weather, she added.

Incidentally, humidity in the city has also risen tremendously in the past week. On Sunday it was recorded to be as high as 93 per cent and 96 per cent in Colaba and Santacruz.
