Beijing, March 15: China said at least 10 people were killed in riots in the Tibetan capital Lhasa during the fiercest pro-independence protests in two decades led by Buddhist monks in the remote Himalayan region, blotting the Communist nation's image ahead of the Olympics in August.

"The victims (who died yesterday) are all innocent civilians and they have been burnt to death," an official with the regional government was quoted as saying by China's state-run Xinhua news agency.

The victims include two hotel employees and two shop owners, the report said.

No foreigner was among the dead, it said, a day after the widespread violence rocked the mountainous capital following the largest demonstrations in two decades.

"We have not received any report that foreigners suffered injuries or death in the beating, smashing, looting and burning on Friday (yesterday)," an official with the Foreign Affairs Office of the regional government said.

Violent protests came ahead of the August 8-24 Beijing Olympics, which human rights organisations want to link with improvement in the Communist nation's rights situation and have been pressing the West to take up the issue with China.

China accused the groups associated with the Dalai Lama of having ‘masterminded’ the violence in Lhasa.

The government of Tibet Autonomous Region said it had ‘enough evidence’ to back its claim of ‘sabotage’ and that it was ‘organised, premeditated and masterminded’ by the Dalai ‘clique’.

"We are fully capable of maintaining social stability of Tibet and safeguarding the safety of the people of all ethnic groups in Tibet and their properties", a regional government official said.

Lhasa streets remained virtually deserted today with not much traffic and burnt cars, motorcycles and bicycles strewn all over, and smoke billowing from them, witnesses said.

Traffic control was imposed on major streets to maintain order.

Power supply resumed in quarters along Duosenge Road, the worst-hit area in downtown Lhasa, but local phone service had not been restored as the communications infrastructure was destroyed in yesterday's violence, Xinhua said.

Quoting witnesses, it said, the trouble began in the afternoon on Friday and people clashed with police and stoned them around the Ramogia Monastery.

Violence soon spread near the Ramogia Monastery and around Jokhang Temple, Tibet's most sacred shrine, and Chomsigkang Market, with a number of shops, banks and hotels burnt, causing blackouts and disrupting communications.

A mosque was also set on fire, the report said. "People were also seen burnt by the attackers."

Many rioters carried backpacks filled with stones and bottles of inflammable liquids, iron bars, wooden sticks and long knives, it said, alleging the mobs assaulted passersby, sparing not even women and children.

The rampaging mobs smashed windows, automatic teller machines and traffic lights, looted several clothing shops, restaurants and mobile phone stores and set alight bikes, motorcycles and cars.

Chinese dam projects is a declaration of War on India and India should boycott the Beijing Olympic by n.krishna on 16 Mar 2008

China will have 1.6 billion people in 2045 and China wants to divert Brahmaputra water to China and this was reported in Scientific American in June 1996. China wants to divert 200 billion cubic metres of water to feed the Yellow River to ease acute water shortage in Shaanxi, Hebel, Beijing and Tianjin. The 2,906 km long Brahmaputra traverse its first stretch of 1,625 km in Tibet, the next 918 km in India and the remaining 363 km in Bangladesh. China wants to drill a 15 km (9.3 miles) tunnel through the Himalayas using nuclear explosives, to divert the water. This would shorten the approximately 3,000 meters altitude drop, from 200 km to just 15 km. Its hydropower potential could be used to pump water to Northwest China over 800 km away. In future Water Wars are going to be common and Chinese dam projects is a declaration of war on India. Chinas claim to Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh is to divert our attention. First India should boycott the Beijing Olympic Games and also ask for the independence of Tibet.

China’s dams in Tibet will make North India a desert by n.krishna on 16 Mar 2008

Tibetan plateau is the principal watershed in Asia and source of its 10 major rivers, Brahmaputra, Sutlej Indus etc. About 90% of the Tibetan rivers' runoff flows to India, and other nations. China that constructed one of the world's biggest dam known as Three Gorges dam, is moving to construct dams across Tibetan rivers. This could make North India a desert in future. This will affect our interlinking of rivers. China is a terrorist communist nation which is occupying Indian soil donated to it by the muslim terrorist nation Pakistan. China is claiming India’s eastern states of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. In retaliation, India should ask for the independence of Tibet.. China refuse to acknowledge the McMohan Line as the border between India and China and staking claim to large tracts of land as a contiguous part of Tibet. In the late 1950s, soon after occupying Tibet. China occupied a large tract (approximately 38,000 square km) of Aksai Chin, a remote part of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir bordering Pakistan, and built a highway (National Highway 219) through it to connect with its eastern province of Xinjiang. It is an illegal occupation of Indian land.

The Muslim Nehru betryed India and Tibet by n.krishna on 16 Mar 2008

In 1914, India entered into a convention with Tibet. Tibetans put faith in India and they chose to be guided by India but Nehru betrayed them. India suffered because of the Traitor Nehru who refused the Permanent seat in UN and instead suggested Chinese name. Ghiyasuddin Ghazi (Ghazi is the surname given to muslims if they kill any non muslim) from Delhi in 1857 escaped from the British army that was killing all muslims. He changed his name to Ganga Dhar. Ghiyasuddins son was Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru was his grandson. The Indus treaty clearly shows that Nehru was a traitor muslim. Nehru signed one sided perpetual Indus water treaty against all norms where we have only 16.4% of the water while Pakistan has 83.6%. 62.4 million sterling pounds was also given to Pakis. Nehru signed one sided Indus water treaty with Pakis that tries to hide the fact that we are giving away our family jewels to Pakis byhiding the sharing of water in Claus II of the treaty. The quantum of water is not mentioned in the main text and instead mentions that three eastern rivers Sutlej, Beas and Ravi for India and three western rivers Indus, Jhelum and Chenab for Pakis

We should liberate Tibet as it is the catchment area for Indian rivers by n.krishna on 16 Mar 2008

2000 years Tibet was independent.but in 1949 China occupied it. From 1954 India recognized Tibet as Tibet Region of China (1954), Tibetan region is part of the People's Republic of China (1958), or Tibet is an autonomous region of China (1988 and 1991). Tibetans put faith in us; they chose to be guided by us; and we betrayed Tibetans.and India is like a transvestite who is afraid of the bully Chinese, is shirking away from its responsibility to the unarmed Buddhists fighting a communist terrorist nation that once attacked India and still holding our territory. Chinese Army is building roads and airstrips in Tibet and near Indian border areas and the fate of Tibet could befall on us. Tibet being the catchment area for our main rivers, Indian politicians should have championed the independence of Tibet. Instead Nehru, the traitor of India even given away the Indus water to Pakistan, and left the Sialchen glacier, which feeds our other rivers open for Pak aggression. If Sardar Patel was Indias PM instead of Nehru, India would not have faced a Kashmir problem or problems in North East. If Nehru was not there partition of India would not have happened.

100 were killed in Tibet uprising and 17% of the Tibetans were killed by China after invasion 1949 by n.krishna on 16 Mar 2008

Now 100 Tibetans were killed in the ongoing uprising. The Chinese invaded Tibet in July of 1949.and from that time some 17% of Tibetans were killed and some 6000 monasteries destroyed by the Chinese. There have been over 1 millon people killed. There were 6 million Tibetans at the time of Chinese occupation of which a million Tibetans were killed by Chinese in one of the modern time genocide. Tibetans upraised against China in 1959 but was suppressed. Tibet was never part of China. During the first few years when China was in control of Tibet, the Chinese declared that Tibet should be part of China, because an Emperor of Tibet once married a Chinese princess. Years later, the Chinese said that Tibet was part of China because of the warrior Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan and the Mongolians were in control of Tibet, but they never made Tibet belong to China. Secondly, the Tibetan people and the Chinese are totally different, culturally and socially speaking. Today Tibet is nothing but a prison. The Chinese continually spy on the Tibetans and arbitrary arrest are common. Tibet requires our moral support for its independence. The brutal Chinese is gunning down freedom fighters.

The Chinese should be hold responsible for violation of Tebetan rights by Raju on 15 Mar 2008

The people dead are invaders from China. These so called civilians are actually part of the Chinese design to change the demography of the Tibet. They brought in Muslims in Tibet who are fierce invaders and Chinese commis are bringing two different religion to fight. It is time that the world community throw the Chinese out of the world community.
