"I think, apart from Sir Garfield Sobers nobody else has played 20 years in international cricket and 20 years playing at the very highest level and to the very highest standard is an achievement beyond compare," Gavaskar said of the 36-year-old, who completed his two decades in international cricket today.
"No place can be too high for this young man and he is young because as far as his enthusiasm for the game is concerned, he is almost childlike. That is what is keeping him going on and on," he said.
Gavaskar, himself a celebrated batsman of his era, said he started understanding cricket only post 1960 and is yet to see a batsman as complete as Tendulkar.
"Since 1960, from when I started to understand a little bit of cricket, he has been the greatest batsman that the game has seen," he said.
Part of the select few to whom Tendulkar turns to advice for batting, Gavaskar said he likes to set challenges for the Little Master.
"I prod him a little all the time. I ask him to get to that next double hundred, that next century or those next thousand runs. I always challenge him a little bit," he said. "The immediate target that I have set for him is the 2011 World Cup. I want him to win that for India," he added.

We should be proud of this Indian who creates records after records in the game of Cricket. He is beyond comparison in any form of cricket,cause proven records are there before our eyes. He is nonchallent when brick bats are aimed at him, rather he converts those into sixes to carry his bat further.Apart from playing cricket he is a human being par excellence. He carries himself as an individual with sense of equilibrium which would never hurt any body's sentiments. He commands a lot of respect from all the Indians. Long live Sachin and God bless you.
well as long as sachin is in the team, gavaskars wish of india winning world cup is a far feched dream.. come to think of it he has played 4 world cups so far, 4th world cup came at the age of 34 (2007 which was a disaster tournamant 4 India)by 2011 he will be 38.we have to see what will happen. even though we may win the world cup by accident we will never be able to display the professionalism and consistancy which Australians showed during 1999 to 2007. anyway i wont blame Sachin or any other indian player 4 this because it is in our blood.i mean all indians
We all agree Sachin has achieved this feat. But accept he was a great player, now, he is not in same form as earlier, nothing great in hitting one century in 10 matches anyone plays. Let us not give more importance to this stupid players. At the same time, why are we not recognizing Viswanathan Anand and Vijendra Singh? Let us think before giving so much Importance to our In-consistent cricketers
India has ONE MOHANCHAND KARAMCHAND GANDHI AND ONE SACHIN RAMESH TEDULKAR. We don't want him to be called SIR SACHIN. For a common indian cricket lover please let him be remain Apla Sachin or Tendulkar. Knighthood awards will lower his status as there are others also getting that and being an INDIAN origin I would not like to share his status with anybody not even Sir Donald. In case of GANDHIJI also people talk and discussed about not getting him Nobel prize. I wonder why people would like to lower his stature to the nobel prize winners like Al Gore or Obama. Bothe are much much taller than all the awards in the world. People talks about his stat in win but they should ask common indian people from kasmir to kanyakumari and probandar to Gauhati that when he is in full flow of his mastry batting how much they enjoyed the game irrespective of the results. He is inspiration source to the youth who has chosen cricket as career and may think upon to make life in cricket field. it is greatest gift of God that sachin has born in India and he has made several records which may be impossible for other cricket great players . Twenty years of cricket the span of cricket life is too big and I wish and pray to God that sachin may play in next world cup and India will repeat the history of world championship in 1983 Thanks.
