Jalandhar Clashes between two groups over alleged encroachment on land that reportedly belongs to the Wakf board left nearly a dozen people injured including three women and caused tension in Partapura village near Jalandhar on Saturday. Two motorcycles were set on fire during protests over the incident while the police have booked the village sarpanch and a few others on charges of attempt to murder, hurting religious sentiments and assault.

The violence occurred after a group led by Partapura sarpanch Dharampal clashed with villagers, who have been using the disputed land. The Wakf Board had reportedly leased out the ten acres that it owns in the village, but the plot was allegedly encroached upon. Police said the sarpanch and a few other villagers went to vacate those who had encroached on the land. Eyewitnesses claim that the situation quickly turned violent with the two groups attacking each other with weapons before police arrived to control the situation.

The injured have been admitted at the Civil Hospital in Jalandhar. SHO Gurwinder Singh of Sadar Police station, under which the village falls, said the sarpanch has been arrested.
