The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, Murugan temple in Palani, Kapaleeswarar Temple in Chennai and Sri Ranganathar Temple in Srirangam in Tiruchirappalli have come under a heightened security, following intelligence inputs that they could be the target of some banned organisations, waiting to expand their trail across the country after the Delhi blasts.
Highly-placed officials told PTI that the move was taken at a review meeting of law and order situation held in Chennai on Wednesday, headed by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Security had also been beefed up at the office of Tamil daily 'Dinamalar' following intelligence reports that the newspaper might also be one of the terror targets, they said.
The daily faced protests from Muslim groups recently after it carried a cartoon of Prophet Mohammed.
Besides these temples, commercial hubs in Chennai and elsewhere have also been placed under surveillance.
However, officials are wary about security arrangements in the temples, as they want the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department, that administers temples, to be more proactive and forthcoming in ensuring fool-proof security "as anybody can enter the temples".
The state police headquarters had ordered the district administrations to tighten up the security arrangements.
Police was keeping a close watch across the state to look for sleeper cells of the banned SIMI or the Indian Mujahideen, ADGP T Rajendran told reporters here on Tuesday.
"There is no specific information as regards sleeper cells," Rajendran said, adding that police were still going ahead with security drills and other preventive measures.

Prayer for peace and prosperity in society. It is time for mankind to shun ways of terror. Fire begets fire. This is when groupism gets fanned and becomes a tool at handa of politicians. Once, it goes out of hands for common man and gets into ambits of politics, rest of developments get governed by considerations of politics, mass frenzy and the like.Let wisdom prevail. Let God be respected by all.
terrorism has taken deep roots now.due to the hamhanded approach by the upa govt the socalled secular forces taken the law into their hands and started to attack the temples.their audacity to attack temples is so terrible that it would be unthinkable that what would happen afterwards.congress govt is well experineced in tackling the terror and extremists.in past the congress govt had eliminated all the naxalites from west bengal during the rule of cm s.s.ray.in punjab they had eliminated the khalistanis during cm beant singh.congress is highly competent to deal with extremists.
I AGREE TO DISAGREE WITH RAJKAKA. THE ONLY WAY FORWARD IS TO LIQUIDATE THE JEHADIS AND THE PROSELYTISERS.THESE NON INDIANS,TERRORISTS SHOULD BE THROWN OUT OF INDIA. THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO BLACKMAIL BY ADOPTING TERRORISM AS THEIR WEAPON BY HOLDING BOMBS AND CONVERSIONS AGAINST OUR HEADS.THEY DO NOT BELIEVE IN DEMOCRACY, SO THEY ARE ADOPTING GUERILLA TACTICS TO FORCE US TO ADOPT THEIR WAYS. EITHER THEY BECOME INDIANS OR THEY LEAVE, I BEG YOUR PARDON, THEY ARE KICKED OUT.
du u think our karunanidhi sir is so fool ??? temple means a "golden egg laying duck" to karunanidhi..if can protect hindu temples...then only he will get enough money from temple ..from that money only he can help terorists and minoriteis ? so now telll is our talaiwan is clever or fool??
We all should give security and save the worship places not only temples and all other religious shrines. The failure to protect the Babri Masjit resulted the country to terror turmoil and now the churches demolished in Orissa and K Ka may lead to different kind of hatred and other incidents.
It seems as though Tamil Nadu Government for all the blame we heap on it is more alert to terrorism than the central Government. Please be alert and we will pray to God to give these people strength to defeat terrorism and protect all temples and other places of worship. It is disheartening to note that there is not too much protest from minority community condemning these acts of terrorism in strong terms and action being taken to combat the same. Silence means tacit support and this silence is not welcome.
If we have to halt this Jihadi madness, then we have to act, and act fast. First and foremost, we must remove this terror-friendly UPA government. Then institute special courts and swiftly prosecute all suspects. Carry out sensence against all convicts within 3 months! And, not to forget, Hang Afzal. These gentlemen should know that if they are caught - they will SURELY be hanged to death within 3 months!! That is the way to deal with this menace. We have seen biryani-for -terror for so many years, it did not work. Let us get tough now.
That's ok, Tamil people anyway don't believe in God so why have temples there? People like that Periyar, Karunanadhi and DK party keep abusing Hindus and God. So why all this tension if temples in TN are destroyed? Tamilians should celebrate if it happens. It is the rest of India that should worry and protect their temples. Let tamil nadu go t0 he11.
What do you know about TN man? What kind of hindu are you? You think TN belongs to those idiotic haters of Hinduism? There is no difference between you and them. I am sure there is no place for you in heaven! You got to look at the temples of TN to know little about hinduism in TN. TN temples are intact because Lord Ram had kept those muslims away from TN. Otherwise they would have destroyed all the temples in TN like what they did in north. Shut your foul mouth!
I agree.Anyways Hindu temples are there only to supply money to govt(muslims to go to Haj). Thats why Karuna is scared.
I am surprised to read Jai Shri Ram's comments. He thinks only a handful of politicians are living in Tamil Nadu. It is the birth place of one of the four Sampradayas, many saints and divine musics. Tamil Nadu people do not attach importance to opportunistic politicians who pose outside as atheists and worhsip inside their homes.
IT is the biggest joke of the century (infact 2 centuries). Sri Karunanithi chairing meeting to protect the temples. He started his political career by breaking temples and their Idols. Now that he is Govt. he is only interested in looting the money devotees put in Hundi. Any thing Anti Hindu pleases him. he may even supply denotators on subsidy to the terrorists to harm Hindus.
Very Good! we should save our worship places! But what about the "CHURCHES" in India..?? We should give Equal importance to all the worship place = Equal importance to all the human beings! Thnaks!:)
Government should do everything and call in army if it has to, to save the Mandirs.
Thats true..But in country like India practically it's very difficult...Everybody knows and seeing in their day to day life that how easy to carry a bomb with them and put it some where....Yes, It can be avoided by different measures...But also WE PUBLIC have to be aware all the time!! God.. Save The Country....Earth!!!
