New Delhi Hinting at intelligence inputs, Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday said terrorists might attempt to do something “dramatic” during the month-long general elections.

“We have specific intelligence about the movement of people. In the run-up to the elections, there will be great temptation to attempt something dramatic,” the Home Minister said on the possibility of terrorist attacks during elections.

Chidambaram said counter-terrorism measures were being taken to check any such plans and every piece of intelligence was being taken “seriously” by the Government.

He said the Government did not have much confidence in the Pakistani system but was giving “room” to Pakistan to take action against terrorists there.

“Not much confidence in Pakistani system. Yet we have given them room, we have been very patient,” Chidambaram said in an interview to Headlines Today.

He added that Pakistan had taken some steps but after that it has done “nothing”.

Terming allegations in Pakistan that India was involved in the Lahore attack as “rubbish”, he said: “I don’t think we need to take these irresponsible statements seriously. It is in Pakistan’s own interest to dismantle the terror infrastructure. The sooner they act, the better it is for Pakistan and the subcontinent.”

On Pakistan’s suggestions about the similarities between the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and the Lahore attack, he said, “If there are glaring similarities, they should investigate those whom they have arrested or detained for the Mumbai attacks. Masterminds are in Pakistan, not in India.”

Are you reminding them to do it?? by ANIYAN on 05 Mar 2009

What a non-sense is this? Are you encouraging them to do it? As a responsible Minister, be cautious about the statements. You are expected to state that every precaution will be taken to create a volatile situation in the country during the election process. Matters of security concerns, operational moves etc. are not disclosed; but in India, right from the Police Officers to Minister level, disclose operational moves, in advance. Why this is done?
