Thackeray criticises Sachin over 'Mumbai for all' remark

Sachin tendulkar

Mumbai Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Monday criticised Sachin Tendulkar for his "Mumbai for all" remark, saying there was no need for the cricket icon to take a "cheeky single" and hurting the Marathi psyche by moving to the pitch of politics.

"There was no need for him to take a cheeky single by making such remarks," Sena mouthpiece 'Sammana' quoted Thackeray as saying.

"By making these remarks, you have got run-out on the pitch of Marathi psyche. You were not even born when the 'Marathi Manoos' got Mumbai and 105 Marathi people sacrificed their lives to get Mumbai," he said.

Thackeray expressed displeasure that Sachin "left the crease" and moved to the pitch of politics by making these remarks which have hurt Marathi sentiment.

In a rebuff to the "Marathi Manoos" plank of Shiv Sena and Raj Thackeray's MNS, Tendulkar had said on Friday that Mumbai is for all Indians.

"Mumbai belongs to India. That is how I look at it. And I am a Maharashtrian and I am extremely proud of that but I am an Indian first," said Tendulkar

Shiv Sena and MNS have often played the "Marathi Manoos" card in a bid to attract votes. Raj Thackeray's fledgling party had even unleashed an anti-north Indian campaign inviting criticism.

Beware Marathi Brothers by Vikas Kumar on 19 Nov 2009

My dear Marathis, wake up . Don't use Goondas like Raj Thackeray and Bal Thackerey for your selfish needs. RAJ THACKERAY of the MNS and Bal Thackeray of the Shiv Sena are like the Talibans, who were once used by Americans and have now become their biggest enemies. In the same way, if Marathis support MNS and Shiv Sena, one day they will mean trouble for all Marathi families. I want to ask one question. Why do we Indians go to foreign countries like USA and Australia? They should also treat us the same way we treat people from Bihar and UP. Suppose if something bad happens to Mumbai and Delhi like the Pakistanis dropping bombs there, will you not come to Bihar for shelter, if it%u2019s a safer place. We should condemn the Central government and the state governments for not developing all the states of India equally.

criticise sachin by harrish on 19 Nov 2009

sachin is a man who played for india not 4 state.thackerey criticse sachine to remark himself an india. but who is thackerey to take desicio on any 1's speech.no 1 need him & no 1 ask him thats why he always try to be in cntroversy.no 1 need his power ithe country like india where no 1 jealous of other religion.he wanted to divide the religon , people on the name of caste. who is he to decide who have to live where for their livelihood. he is not the heir of mumbai.

Stay in the crease of democracy by Prem Nizar Hameed on 18 Nov 2009

We should not nurture regionalism. Otherwise it will devour the concept of the biggest joint family in the world. And for the matter of Sachin, it is painful. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is the Czar of Cricket who has always been at the zenith of his career. His magic bat sends the balls to cross many boundaries, but he always stays within the boundary of humility. He still runs between wickets for garnering runs, but stays in the crease of decency. He attributes his humility to his upbringing. For that I salute not only him, but also his beloved parents. I live in his time as a fellow citizen is a great achievement for me. May a world cup final with his outstanding performance witness his glorious retirement! However, Bal Thackeray must learn a simple lesson from this proud Marathi manoos for how to stay in the crease of democracy.

Need to think seriously by DJ on 18 Nov 2009

Sachin's statement is true statement and everyone should follow, but can someone go to Kashmir - Srinagar and announce any India is welcome and settle in Srinagar. I think issue is disparity and hypocrysy. Since Marathi people are more educated and liberal, anyone can say anything. Until anyone in India can go freely to any place including in Kashmir, Sachin's statement does not make sense with current situation.

Mah by lovedo Marati on 18 Nov 2009

There were different political scenario when the issue of settling in Kashmir came into picture. Such a political circumstance does not exist. In case of Maharashtra it is pure xenophobia.

Shiv Sena remarks about Sachin's Brave Quote. by JASWANT SINGH BAWA on 17 Nov 2009

Yes, I agree with Sachin and all others who wants India to be one , not disintegrated. What the hell this JOKER THACKERAY is talking about? That a few MANOOS died to get Maharastra. Does he know how many indians scarificed their lives to get rid of BRITISh RAJ. Is this man THACKERAY an Insane. So what if UPites or Biharis comes their to find work. They say they commit crimes and that is why their police to look after those bad elements, not these THUGS like THACKERAY. They have never worked a job in their lives and become leader of Uneducated people and teach them the wrong way a country should be run. By the way, Indian Constitution also says that a non-Hilly person cannot buy a land or do business in Himachal and J&K and other places. NOW IS THAT IS WRONG TOO. INDIAN SHOULD BE FOR ALL INDIANS AND INDIANS SHOULD BE FREE TO LIVE ANYWHERE THEY WANT TO. THAT is free Country is all About Otherwise we are still in BONDS. INDIA,DO SOMETHING ABOUT ALL THIS MESS.

SACHIN's WORDS IN COUNTRY's INTEGRATION by B S GANESH BANGALORE on 17 Nov 2009

As per report ( Nov 16) the excellent remark of Sachin Tendulkar that 'Mumbai for all " remark drew criticism from Shiv Sena chief. It is no doubt true that entire country is for indian citizens and there should be no restriction for anybody to work anywhere pursuing legaly accetpable work. But the problem is many people from Bihar and UP are flooding to many places pursuing crimes of thefts, dacoity etc. Unfortunatety our governments are not able to severely punish them and provide safety and security to victims. In Bangalore itself daily many dacoities are going on by Biharis. It is high time politicians of Bihar and UP concentrate on good governance and provide employment opporunities to their own people on fast track to avoid rushing to other places and creating law and order problems to the honest people of the other state. S Sena leader is getting old and his mind is not working so sharp as before! he is under pressure and afraid of sachin getting into politics. I believe all GOOD people should join politics and clean the country.

Thank you Little Master by Hitesh on 17 Nov 2009

Sachin Thank you! for saying something which many many Indians wanted to always say out LOUD and Clear. Today, for me and a billion other INDIANS you are way above a National Sports Icon. You are an Icon of Patriotism.

Bal Thackeray by Rajesh Vyas on 17 Nov 2009

In case of Bal Thackeray, senility has crossed all limits. Castigating someone like Sachin for saying I an INDIAN First, is the height of insanity associated with the ageing superemo of the SHIV SENA. He has made himself a laughing stock of the highest order!!!! With Bal Thackeray around we do not need joksters and jesters anymore!!!!

dirty politics by ukunnikrishnan6 on 17 Nov 2009

today its a national disgrace that people like thackeray are trying to gain political interest by spreading the feeling of hatred in our countymen and that too in the name of regionality. I want to say so what we are of different clour, region , and thinking , the main point is we are all indian and its all of our anscestors united effort that we are enjoying this freedom and wealth.People like thackeray can never do any good for our country .They will only try to divide us for their gain so they can rule us .i want to say that it is not they who rule the our nation its our vote through which we rule .Once in every five years we get a chance to select our representator in the government ,and it is upto us that we choose a person who is responsible towards not only our state but also towards our country. Its in our hand to choose what future we want for our children all want to say is that why cant we attain a good future together like we got our freedom from britishers. jai hind

Mumbai for all remark of Sachin by HG Ketkar on 17 Nov 2009

The unwanted criticism by self styled Hindu Samrat, Bala Saheb Thakrey has brought him down to dust in the current political era. Really, it is very sad to see and read such an article from respected Bala Saheb Thackrey throwing his opinion on Sachin's gentle push to the media. All this is nothing but to gain an upper hand over the current euphoria lodged by Raj Thackrey over Marathi Manoos issue. It is highly regreted that honourable Bala Saheb Thackrey tried to intervene the hooliganism of MNS by taking shelter of the simple statement of ALL TIME GREAT Sachin, who never never got involved in any type of controversy in his spotless 20 years of cricket and only brought laurels to the nation, India. In fact, if Hindu Samrat Bala Saheb Thakrey applauded Sachin on this score, he would have got several supporting opinion on this aspect, but, unfortunately, it is a sorry affair that Sahcin has been mis-interpreted by his own Maharashtrian great Bala Saheb Thakrey.

Misinterpretation from great Maharashtrian by Pankaj on 17 Nov 2009

Just single mistake Bal Thakare commited that they blamed the national icon sachin and made himself a reason for controversy....Nothing wrong in sachin's statement....I'm agree with H G Ketkar who wrote his opinion very nicely.....

thackeray vs sachin by T.S.gopalakrishnan on 17 Nov 2009

sirs, Sachin should have stopped by saying that he belongs to entire India and also to the whole world as far as his playing cricket. He need not have said that Mumbai belongs to all Indians, since he would not know whether it is correct in actual practice as all the cities in India belonged to all the Indians based on speaking the local language of those places only. Whatever may be the problems with Thackeray he is terming Sachin talking as a politician is more or less correct as evidenced by the politics hovering around Sachin now.The media as usual is tracking this story of sachin as a politician for one day all through the day in place sachin's story for twenty glorious cricket years. Be a good 'Maharashtrian' by Maharashtrian on 17 Nov 2009

Be a good Maharashtrian. You all should destroy buses, taxis, vandalize shops, hurt everything or everyone who rises his voice. This is the culture the S.Sena and MNS are asking people to follow because these things were done by the greats like Shivaji and many other leaders in the past. So there is nothing wrong in asking people to follow the culutre being preserved by S.Sena and MNS. You all should appreciate the troubles these parties are taking and going through in preserving this culture! Hail S.Sena and MNS!

situation makes the man not the nation. by sridharan bharadwaj on 17 Nov 2009

it is quite right the situation makes the man not yhe cast, creed etc. in war the co-soldier's blood will make the college to enrage no the so called nationalism. it is called bloodism. when the situation arises such that the native is thrashed to corner by so called strong people, the native has to revert back with sharpness. everyone sholud under satand that other's also have to live. not by using power, pushing all biharis baboos and others to mumbai creating the situation ugly. i am not finding any wrong if the native raise their voice for their existance. the political experts should be punished in this respect than any others.

Why not ask whose assam is it to bhutia? by dhananjay on 17 Nov 2009

the reporter happened to be curious about mumbai's "belonging" as it is some lost city just discovered by some columbus for everyone to rush to it. The question mumbai kis ki hai itself is dividing isnt it? why cant non marathi accept the fact that they are living in city which is capital city of maharashtr? assam has seen more violace oevr migrant issue in past but no one questions it to bhutia. no one questions saurabh that calcutta kiska hai? or dhoni as jharkhand kiska hai? If mumbai belongs to nation then why do we have minority reservations based on linguistic minority status for engineering collages and schools in city? when it is time to earn cheap land for institutes and various subsidies, they will take in account maharashtr. these communities are no more minorties in mumbai. Pure desh ka adhikar mumbai ki problems me hai example no place for dumping ground (exisiting capacity not enough). We welcome migrant workers after according infrastructure is in place.
