Mumbai, February 3: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists clashed with Samajwadi Party supporters close to the venue of a rally organised by United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA).

The clash took place before the start of the rally at Shivaji Park where top leaders of UNPA, including Samajwadi Party chief and the group's Chairman Mulayam Singh Yadav, are scheduled to speak.

Some members of the mob were detained and security at the venue in Central Mumbai stepped up, police said.

Activists of both political parties assembled outside the Plaza Cinema in Dadar and indulged in stone pelting. Five cars were also damaged in the incident.

The clash comes hours after actress and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan's retaliation to MNS President Raj Thackeray's statement against her husband and superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

Incidents of tearing of posters en-route to Shivaji Park in Central Mumbai allegedly by MNS activists to disrupt the rally have also been reported.

Raj thackeray sowing the seeds of hatred and ill by P.P. TALWAR on 04 Feb 2008

It is a pity that when India is being hailed as a true democractic country all over the world, some short-sighted persons like MNS President, Raj Thackeray are not only bringing shame to themselves by following narrow caste, community and ethnic policy, they are lowering the image of own country in the eyes of the world nations. By forcibly imposing Marathi language on non- Marathi north indians living in Mumbai for ages, he is only sowing the seeds of ethnic hatred and ill-will amongst the residents. How would Raj Thackeray feel, if as a retaliatory measure, the Marathi people living, all over in north india are given similar treatment as being meted out to north indians in Mumbai.? It is time, central government, as well as the state government came down heavily on the MNS offenders, indulging in illegal activity of physically assaulting Non-Marathi people in Mumbai.

MNS by KanwalJJeet Sandhu on 04 Feb 2008

The way they went about their work, they should re-name its party name from Maharastra Nav Nirman to Maharastra Tood- Food Party or Maharastra demolition services. You cannot attain respect by disrespecting poor, and you cannot become great by insulting others. Raj's party is trying to target the poor Bihari migrants, ire on Amitab is just a desparate move.No one in the country has right to hurt someones religious feelings. Raj Thakrey's political aspirations are over. He can now just be ordinary trouble maker.

Raj is not alone by Tilak on 04 Feb 2008

I don't think Raj Thackeray is responsible for what is happening today in Bombay. Make no mistake Raj Thackeray is not alone..he has got silent support from every leader from Maharashtra on this that includes Sharad Pawar and Pratibha Patil. Now it is up to people specailly those residing in UP and Bihar and show black flags to these Marathi leaders. Time is up Mulayam Babu and Lalu Yadav...in one single day this 'Launda' has shown you your Yadav Power in India. Hosh me aa jao...warna Marathi jaga ho...samajh me aaya.
