Thane traffic cops, RTO collect hefty fine from erring auto-drivers

In a joint operation, the Thane traffic police and the Regional Traffic Office (RTO), fined around 664 auto drivers for reasons ranging from not possessing valid documents to refusing to take passengers to their desired locations. The traffic police collected a fine of Rs 52,200 from these auto drivers in last two days.

According to Thane’s Joint Commissioner of Police, Madhu Shinde, the cops and the RTO officials undertook the operation after they received various complaints from the commuters.

This drive was carried in 6 traffic units of the Thane police commissionerate. Shinde added they would be undertaking similar drives across the entire commissionerate as there were numerous complaints against the auto drivers by the commuters.

Most of the cases that were registered by the Vartak Nagar and Wagle estate traffic units —163 and 116 cases respectively. The traffic police also took around 213 autorickshaws to RTO after the drivers failed to submit necessary documents.
