Gandhinagar, March 26 As the state government gets ready to celebrate the historic occasion of Narmada waters reaching Tharad and Jalore in Rajasthan on Thursday, a reply given by Water Supply Minister Nitin Patel in response to a starred query in the Assembly on Wednesday, has caused a major embarrassment to Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

While the dedication ceremony of the Narmada Main Canal carrying the Narmada waters to Rajasthan is expected to be grand event with a lot of people participation, the House was informed that the same water would be available to the people of Tharad and Vav, the place where the dedication ceremony is being held, only by 2010.

In his question, Palanpur BJP MLA Govindbhai Prajapati had asked by when the Narmada water would be available for drinking purposes in Vav and Tharad talukas. Replying to this, Minister Patel informed the House that depending on the financial situation, the water would be available by March 2010. He also informed that the tendering process for the water works would begin soon, the reply informed.

In a related development, Modi again sought to hog all the limelight on the Narmada project with the invitation for the dedication ceremony carrying only his photograph.

The invite sent out on Wednesday carried a beaming picture of Modi along with a small picture of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. What has led to many raised eyebrows is that there is no mention of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia in the invite, even though it is meant to be a joint dedication ceremony.

This is not the first time that the CM has taken credit for the project. But in the past, when Modi was under fire for taking all the credit, he had made several attempts at salvaging the situation, even giving credit to all the earlier chief ministers of Gujarat for the success of the project.

The last such effort was the dedication ceremony of the hydropower plant at the Sardar Sarovar Dam last year, when the government invite carried pictures of all earlier CMs associated with the project since the 1980s. But this time, Modi was back to his old ways.
