Kochi A petition has been moved in a lower court seeking action against former UN Under Secretary General Shashi Tharoor for allegedly interrupting the national anthem at a function here last month, a charge denied by him.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Cherian Kuriakose posted the case to Jan 31 for recording the statement of the petitioner Joy Kaitharath, General Secretary of the State Human Rights Protection Centre, and the witness. The court, however, declined to forward the matter to police.

However, Tharoor refuted the allegation that he had shown disrespect to the national anthem and dubbed as "motivated lies" reports appearing in a section of the media.

The petitioner alleged that Tharoor had "intentionally prevented" the singing of the National Anthem and caused disturbance to the assembly engaged in singing the anthem on Dec 16 at a function at Le Meridian.

The petitioner stated that he did not lodge a complaint with the police since he apprehended that they will not register a case against a "an influential person".

"The allegation is totally false. There was no interruption of the national anthem. At no point in my life have I ever interrupted the singing of National Anthem or shown disrespect to any national symbol", Tharoor said in a statement in Thiruvananthapuram.

National Anthem by Richard Kendrick on 21 Jan 2009

In the U.S., soloists chosen to sing their National Anthem frequently bend it out of shape by tryng to display a range and talent which they most obviously do not have. Such people who damage their National Anthem in this way should be charged with treason.

Tharoor disrupts National Anthem by Sunny Sahni on 18 Jan 2009

Mr. Tharoor such an eminent personality who has represented india and achieved accolades at the international level could not in his dreams have done such a reprehensible act. He is a wise man and like any other Indian respects Indian Anthem to the core of his heart. Let us not raise such issues that hurt the sentiments of integrity and bring disrespect to the soul of mother india. Furthermore such acts if are done to gain mileage in anyway should be punished in everyway possible. As for Mr Tharoor he should counter these remarks and press contempt charges against the people involved. These ppl should be charged with dishonouring National Anthem.
