Thiruvananthapuram Unfazed by the 'outsider' tag, Shashi Tharoor, who will start a new innings by contesting the Lok Sabha polls after a long stint with the UN, says he is confident of rallying support by bringing "different" vision and experiences onto the political stage.

Tharoor, 53, who has been given a Congress ticket from Thiruvananthapuram, said he "accepted" that the local people may feel that their hardwork is being bypassed in favour of somebody from the outside".

"Concerning this my only answer truly can be that if you look at the overall national picture one needs a balance. One needs people who indeed are absolutely from the very soil that they are representing. And, one needs people who bring a different vision to that overall shape of the electorate is represented though different kinds of vision," Tharoor, who has also authored many books, was quoted as saying in a TV channel.

He was questioned about his new role and the charge that most of his recent life he had lived in New York and "knew Manhattan more than Thiruvananthapuram". Tharoor started working with the UN in 1978 and resigned from the post of Under Secretary General in February 2007. Backed by India, he unsuccessfully contested for the post of the UN Secretary General in 2006.

"It seems to me that those who may have been disappointed that I have been given this nomination have every right to to be disappointed," Tharoor said about the Lok Sabha ticket.

But the former diplomat said he had spoken to "many of the legitimate aspirants, they too have rallied around saying we are happy to have you because after all I too am making an effort to get to know them and their problems... bringing my experiences which are very different experiences onto the political stage as well".

sasi tharoor once insulted father of the nation, gandhiji, and the current nehru family in his book some time back, which is still circulated. yet the party chose him to be a candidate. during a recent federal bank convention, he insulted the national song and made all those 'highest literate' people of kerala to follow what he says in singing the national song. how a person can change the method of singing a national song and how these literate people listened to his advice is beyond one's comprehension. shame on these people to have sung the deseeya ganam in this manner, when we have a certain a code accepted by all for this national song. who is sasi tharoor to change it? he should be defeated in trivandrum and should be put in jail for insulting deseeya ganam along with the federal bank employees who sang the song in a different manner, insulting the nation. he still thinks that he is contesting an US election, not an indian election.

it is not a question of outsider. but a bitter critic of Gandhi and nehru family. sasi tharoor once insulted father of the nation, gandhiji, and the current nehru family in his book some time back, which is still circulated. yet the party chose him to be a candidate. during a recent federal bank convention, he insulted the national song and made all those 'highest literate' people of kerala to follow what he says in singing the national song. how a person can change the method of singing a national song and how these literate people listened to his advice is beyond one's comprehension. shame on these people to have sung the deseeya ganam in this manner, when we have a certain a code accepted by all for this national song. who is sasi tharoor to change it? he should be defeated in trivandrum and should be put in jail for insulting deseeya ganam along with the federal bank employees who sang the song in a different manner, insulting the nation.

Dear Sashi Taroor, the good news for you is that your ardent followers in this country are those westernised outwardly mobile armchair liberals ,because of your own westernised background. The bad news is that these tribes do not venture out to vote on the day of reckoning. They raised a mediocre soccer player called Beckham to the top of the world because he is a fashion icon. But in that case they did not have to vote. The media could do it for them. In your case they will have to walk all the way to a polling station and stand in queue with 'country indians'.I doubt very much if this will click. Moreover Kerala has fewer people of that tribe as on today and I guess Trivandrum was not a good choice. You should have tried you luck with Bangalore,or Mumbai ( with the strong presence of oscar loving bollywood family)

The people of Kerala have not been served well by the political hacks who represent them at the center. Most of them are just seat warmers, do nothings, who have failed their state miserably. What they need and deserve are people who will strive might and main to serve the people they represent. If Keraleans want to get their rightful due from the center, they must send to Delhi people with vision and stature who can bring home the bacon.

Very well said by Mr.Tharoor that ONE NEEDS PEOPLE WHO INDEED ARE ABSOLUTELY FROM THE VERY SOIL;THAT THEY ARE REPRESENTING.But with this view how can he work under a woman who is not atall from this soil?He should join BJP instead to keep the balance in the National polity. Its nice to have him in politics but not with treacherous goons of Congress.

It will be good to have guys with such intenational exposure...Only if they use it for a better policy for India. With the history, it is difficult to say, if highly educated guys have done sth extraordinary.
