While we all thought pop superstar Madonna and her irreverent filmmaker husband Guy Ritchie would be dining at author Gregory David Roberts’s Kala Ghoda terrace apartment, the international guests, after a day of slumming it out, preferred the sandy and moonlit mood of the beach-set restaurant Salt Water Grill.

On the table were none of Roberts’s good pals but a mixed bag of whom the author thought Madonna would like to meet. So there was actor John Abraham (search me why), designer Priya Kataria Puri (who again?), Raja and Queenie Dhody (the best reps of Mumbai’s swish set, according to some), musician Tino Francorzi and his wife Judith, couple-about-town Devieka and Suresh Bhojwani and the restaurant’s cherubic owner Riyaaz Amlani. We’re told that the lady, a vegetarian, had asparagus soup and spinach and ricotta ravioli with her Bechamel Bordeaux. She was “warm, polite and mellow”, and chatted about spirituality.

We’re also informed the real star of the evening was her husband, who was funny, inquisitive and a great conversationalist. Some girls, we tell you.
