“The aim is to finish pending works and projects in the first quarter of my term, that is the first three months. The time for the mayor’s term is just 365 days, of these, two days are already over,” Chhabra told Newsline On Wednesday.
After winning the election in a one-sided poll yesterday, Chhabra today took over the office followed by a large number of well-wishers who came to greet Chhabra in his office.
Sitting in his office with bouquets, a visibly tired Mayor prepared his day’s schedule with the coterie of Congress councillors sitting by his side.
“I visited the milkman in Dhanas today who lost 13 cattle due to food poisoning. I have spoken to Deputy Commissioner R K Rao if something could be done in this case,” said Chhabra. A number of functions were also planned in the city to welcome the new Mayor. In the afternoon, the market association of Sector 21 extended a formal welcome to him by organising a small function, which was attended by other Congress councillors.
A qualified lawyer, Chhabra, 46, said he shifted his base to the city over 22 years ago and rose to the echelons of power in the city political circles especially with the support of leaders like local MP Pawan Bansal. “I do not belong to any political party but it is due to the support of senior leaders like Bansal and B B Behl that I rose to the position of Mayor,” he said.
It is his loyalty to the sitting MP, which is largely believed to be the prime reason for Chhabra’s success in the city circles. Before the elections, there was some resentment over his candidature by senior Congress councillors like Chandermukhi Sharma, who, it was believed, would go independent way to stake his claim for the Mayor’s seat. Besides being a councillor in the municipal corporation for the last six years, Chhabra was also the senior Vice President of the NSUI for the last four and half years.
He has also served as President, District Youth Congress, and Joint Secretary, Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee.
Before becoming Mayor, his previous big post at MC was that of Senior Deputy Mayor in the year 2004, when the Congress won the Chandigarh Parliamentary seat.
