The guards had complained about screams and strange voices from a new university block, particularly from the spot where a library is being built.
“Personally I don’t believe in ghosts but I do believe in God,” said vice chancellor Dr S S Gill. “The guards had wanted a religious ceremony to be held and that is what we did... We have to respect everybody’s (beliefs).”
What had heightened the guards’ fears was the history of the campus site. The district jail was here and convicts used to be hanged during British rule. The jail has since shifted.
Since the paath was held, Dr Gill says, “the complaints about voices have stopped, which means that the ‘ghosts and evil spirits’ are no longer there.”
