Mumbai, October 10: If there is one actor who will never undermine the significance of multi-starrers, it is Sharman Joshi. After playing the role of the affable Sukhi in ‘Rang De Basanti’, and the over-ambitious Rahul in ‘Life in a Metro’, he now plays Shyam Varma, a call centre employee in ‘Hello’. Joshi who has worked with industry bigwigs right from his debut film ‘Godmother’, is gung-ho about sharing screen space with some of Bollywood’s best yet again, that include Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif.

“With Hello, I have achieved two things: the opportunity to work with a bunch of talented actors and a chance to do a role based on a fictional character. Moreover, Atul (Agnihotri, the director) has taken care to see that everyone has equal screen space,” he vouches.

The movie, based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller, One Night @ the Call Centre, had the entire cast posted at a call centre for a 30-day period. “I read the book a couple of times and then got used to the workings of a call centre. To convert a 300-page book into a 30-page script is a difficult job and there are definitely going to be comparisons with the character in the book,” says the 34-year-old actor, who is up for the challenge.

Although Joshi has been considered a versatile actor and a powerhouse performer, he still has to prove his mettle at the box office through a solo hit. But for this cheerful actor, it seems, personal achievement coexists with the movie’s success. “All films are multi-starrers in that sense. A single person cannot make a successful film. It is the effort and hard work of many involved.”

Joshi, who started off his stint almost a decade ago, comes from a family of distinguished theatre actors. “Both my father and uncle are from the theatre fraternity. And I’d happily return to my theatre roots whenever my film career ceases to satisfy me. At the moment, films are an uplifting experience and I’m totally into them.” After playing Shabana Azmi’s truant son in ‘Godmother’, it was an avalanche of comedies that followed. But he doesn’t want to be stereotyped as a comedian.

“I am not averse to comedies. Right now, my priority is a good script — it could be of any genre. You get the same offers sometimes but then you have to wait for the right time. If something that I am looking for doesn’t come my way, I am okay with just chilling at home.”

Clearly, Joshi’s date diary looks occupied for the year. Onir’s ‘Sorry Bhai’ and ‘Raqeeb’ are ready for release and he has begun shooting for ‘3 Idiots’. But at the moment, it is ‘Hello’ that he hopes will see huge success. “The book had more than 10 million readers. With the movie, we hope to cross that mark,” he says, ambitiously.
