Why this departure from melodrama to meaningful cinema? This is not what your fans expect from you.
I have directed family entertainers and comedies. But filmmaking is not just masti. Films should also provoke society and reflect reality. After producing Joggers Park, I was inspired to tackle other issues. The idea for Black & White struck me four years ago. Actually, I did not want to direct the film and had asked Madhur Bhandarkar to do it, but he was busy.

What is Black & White about?
It is meant to send out the signal that in life things are not black or white. This film is about terrorism and I studied various terrorist groups to understand their ideologies. I realised that there are no bad human beings, it is only the circumstances that bring out the worst in us. Love is the only remedy to banish hatred.

You are casting Anil Kapoor after nine years. Was he your first choice?
Yes, he was. With him I do not have to make an effort. Without saying much, he knows what I require from him. We have a good equation.

You shot the film in Chandni Chowk.
Chandni Chowk is symbolically Delhi. Here, different people co-exist in harmony and it is the most democratic and secular place I have seen.

You have a whole new cast for this film. How did you choose Anurag Sinha for the role?
He trained at the Film and Television Institute of India for two years and is thorough with his work. I like to recruit actors who have training. It is very necessary to possess some basic skills. I did not need to take any screen test for Anurag. Whenever I meet newcomers who are looking for a role, they tell me, ‘Sir, aap sar pe haath rakh do.’ That is no way to become an actor. From now on, I will only hire students with some training in acting.

Will we see more such films from you?
Well, my mainstream movies will continue. Next year, we release Yuvraj that is a big project. In that you will see me in my old avatar. The show will go on.
