Fern Mallis, senior vice-president of IMG Fashion in New York, has made her presence felt at the India fashion weeks over the years. The rather intimidating fashionista, now involved with the Lakme Fashion Week, was in town to announce a corporate tie-up with luxury bed-linen brand Maishaa. She spoke to GUNJAN SANGWAN about the design scene in India. Excerpts:

How exciting is Brand India at the New York Fashion Week (NYFW)?
The NYFW is always open to new talents and creativity. People there are curious about Indian designers. The NYFW has only serious fashion buyers and they have very high expectations. Anyone who showcases must be ready to do business. Unfortunately, Indian designers haven’t been able to do that till now.

Is there a confusion abroad about the two fashion weeks in India? Which one, according to you, does better?
Of course, business is being divided. I know for a fact that most international buyers come to the Lakme Fashion Week because of IMG’s contacts in fashion. Many go where we ask them to go. I don’t know what the scene at the other fashion week is like.

Apparently, Lakme has been sending feelers to the FDCI to patch up things. What are your comments?
Firstly, the FDCI has to look at its own agenda. I don’t think there will be a patch up soon.

What is lacking at the India fashion weeks?
These events need a higher level of professionalism. For example, the way the whole wardrobe malfunction issue was dealt with was shocking. In the West, the skin show on the ramp is of no relevance at all. Cultural issues need to be addressed so that you don’t offend anybody, yet reach global standards.
