Chandigarh, January 17 The police have zeroed in on a teenaged girl as the prime suspect in the Taj theft case. The girl was captured by the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed at the hotel lobby.

She also matches the description of the culprit who recently committed theft at the residence of a leading jeweller, Anil Talwar, at his Sector 9 residence.

The police also said the girl could also be the one who was caught red-handed while stealing during a marriage function at a retired Colonel's place in Panchkula. She was, however, let off by the Colonel’s family.

A theft of gold jewellery worth around Rs 5 to 6 lakh was reported during a party at Hotel Taj, Sector 17, Chandigarh yesterday.

The complaint was lodged by a Ludhiana resident Pramod Kumar Bhardwaj, who alleged that someone had stolen his bag containing a diamond ring, a diamond set, two gold sets, two bracelets and a silver bowl.

The police are looking at the girl as the prime suspect on the basis of pictures captured by the cameraman at the retired Colonel's place, those taken during the house-warming function at Talwars’ residence and the pictures caught on the CCTV installed at the Taj. “We met the retired Colonel, who told us that a girl was caught while she was trying to escape after committing theft at the time when the doli of her daughter was leaving the house. People started beating her up, but my mother objected to this and we then allowed her to leave," Talwar told Newsline.

The theft at the Taj during the marriage function was the fourth theft of the same nature in the past fortnight. In another such theft during a marriage function at Sector 43, a similar-looking girl has emerged as the prime suspect.

“The girl could be from the slums. But she was dressed like a regular teenager – a denim jacket and jeans. She was not alone; we are suspecting at least three more boys who were accompanying her. The investigations are on," said one of the investigating officials.
