Since then, he has built an impressive list of clients, which includes young professionals and corporate houses. “I have a network of over 1,000 people on Facebook, where the information is posted,” divulges Kapoor. His themes range from Warehouse, where a club was converted into a garage with vintage cars and bikes, to Booze Factory with unlimited drinks including ten differently flavoured beers. And if you dole out a few more bucks, you can get access to VIP parties that come with exclusive lounges and imported liquor. “In private parties the crowd goes up to 1,000 people and the passes are limited,” says Kapoor.
At a bash held on Sunday at a Chattarpur farmhouse, Kapoor had revellers walking down a ramp constructed at the entrance. He states, “I usually play house music in the beginning to keep the crowd going. Punjabi music follows post midnight.” The entry price is Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000 for VIP lounges.
Shabad Mehta, 24, owner of Relax Fine Dining restaurant in Kailash colony, has also been organising theme parties for six years. Says he, “There is 50 per cent profit in this business. With most companies the catering is done in-house and bartenders and managers are outsourced from hotels. Students from hospitality institutes are roped in for service and a liquor license is taken from wine shops.” The entry charge for Mehta’s parties range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000.
Last Friday night, Alex Clerin, a 35-year-old French national, hosted a circus theme party at South Delhi’s trendy nightclub Ministry of Sound. The bright neon lit discotheque was shaped like a pyramid and guests were greeted by a yellow turbaned woman swallowing fire and a skimpily clad young woman who was walking on a rope. Most of the invitees were members of the website delhiexpat.com, which Clerin floated with Danish buddy Peter Crawfurd in October 2006. Says Clerin, “I had no clue that I will end up setting up a website for expatriates when I landed in Delhi one and half years ago.”
Clerin has a management degree from France and moved to India from Netherlands on account of his wife’s job. His first party was a New Year eve bash that was attended by 1,000 people, as against an expected 400, in a farmhouse in Chattarpur. “For Europeans pubbing is a way of life. The scene here is pretty lame. I do things a little unusually,” says Clerin, who once converted a bar into a waterslide and has hosted private dos in Ivy and Tabula Rasa. Clerin’s parties have a 70-30 ratio of foreigners and Indians and the entry price is Rs 700 onwards.
