Nashik, November 6: On the protest of Shiv Sena-BJP and other Hindu organisations against the arrest of Sadhvi Pragya Singh, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Thursday said secular parties or those having trust in law and judiciary do not interfere in crime investigations.

Pragya Singh Thakur is national president of Vande Matram organisation and was arrested in connection with Malegaon Blasts.

Deshmukh, however, cleared that protest against the arrest of Sadhvi was their (parties) role.

Speaking on Marathi signboard issue, strongly raised by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena, he said there is a law making it compulsory to have signboards in Marathi along with other languages and give priority to locals. However, these laws were not implemented properly, he added.

When asked about the possibility of conducting competitive examinations in the state following attack on north Indian students by MNS during railway recruitment examinations, he said such things will not take place again.

He said 19 percent locals had also applied for the same railway recruitment examination, adding that the government was considering to give powers to district collectors to monitor employment opportunities and give top priority to local candidates.

Replying to a question on JNRPT sceheme, he said state has sent its proposals to the centre and demanded Rs 50,000 crore for Mumbai and other cities for the developmental schemes.

On state Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil’s statement that, 'We will reply bullet to bullet', Deshmukh said that Patil’s statement was in the context of naxalite activities in the state but meanwhile, a North Indian youth was killed in police encounter in Mumbai while he was trying to take over a BEST bus, and Patil’s statement was attributed to the incident.

Later Patil clarified his stand, he added.

“There was no security in Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi when it was attacked and I and Union Home Minister were in Nanded at that time,” Deshmukh said on the issue.

Deshmukh, in a public meeting on Wednesday in Nashik, assured farmers of the state of loan waiver.

Centre has decided to waive loans of Rs 71,000 crores of the farmers in the country and state has received Rs 8.5 thousand crore for the purpose.

Local signboards in Local Languages No harm by SGK on 07 Nov 2008

I am amazed when I see signboards in local languages in Bangalore, Chennai, T'puram, Hyderabad and they are not there in M'bai

agree by aam adami on 07 Nov 2008

There's no problem in having sign-boards in local language, but also have hindi and english along with it. Let Local language be the first. It's really terrible to have sign-boards ONLY in local language, which i have seen in most of the southern states.

No Marathi signboard please by Mrs Bhanumati on 06 Nov 2008

Bombay is international city and there should not be marathi signboard. We need English Signboard. Law can be modified and not written by God.

reply by Jayesh Naik on 07 Nov 2008

Madam, yes Mumbai is an international city. no doubt about that. But what is wrong in changing the signboards in Marathi? Mumbai is in Maharshtra madam not in UP/Bihar or UK/USA to have signboards in English. Angrez to chale gaye lekin lagata hai tumhe chhod gaye....

Will the CM please clarify what is stopping them from implementing the law which has been in existing to have sign boards in Marathi. Why no one is questioning concerned persons why this has not be taken up after so many years. Does every thing have to be implemented after some kind of agitation ?
