There is a definite smell of match-fixing in IPL: Miandad

Karachi He may consider the Indian Premier League a joke but former Pakistan Captain Javed Miandad feels there is a serious possibility of matches being fixed in the cash-rich Twenty20 event.

Miandad said the league, currently underway in South Africa, has been witness to some surprising results where teams have lost from winning positions.

"There is a definite smell of match-fixing coming from the IPL where strange things are happening," he told the "Express" newspaper on Friday.

"I don't consider the IPL as cricket, it is a joke. It is strange that players who are not regular bowlers have taken hat-tricks in the league. Teams are losing matches from winning positions," he said.

Miandad feels the International Cricket Council (ICC) needs to step in and check possible corruption in the event.

"If at all such Twenty20 cricket leagues must be held they should be held under the direct supervision of the ICC or else there will always be fear of corruption taking place in matches," he said.

Miandad said it was strange that the ICC's anti-corruption unit was not present in the IPL despite the big money at stake and the number of foreign players involved in the competition.

The IPL organisers rejected an ICC offer to have the anti-corruption unit supervise this year's tournament and have arranged for their own security and anti-corruption officers.

The ICC had asked for USD 1.2 million from the Indian board to cover the costs of their ACU activities in the IPL which was rejected.

"The ICC must stop the IPL because it is already damaging the fabric of the sport and forcing players to change their loyalties," he said.

Miandad, also a former coach of the Pakistan team, cited the example of West Indian captain Chris Gayle, who wants to give up national captaincy.

"He reached England just two days before his country's test against England from the IPL which was I think is an insult to test cricket and the result the West Indies lost badly in the test," he noted.

"I fear that if the ICC does not step in the IPL could also end up damaging the traditional forms of cricket. Already the players are putting money above country. Only the Indian cricket board and its players were gaining from the IPL which has no financial benefits for the other boards."

U R Right Miandad by MACHOMAN on 22 May 2009

This IPL and Overwhelming 20/20 Cricket Activity is causing genuine damage to serious cricket. Great Player like Miandad has correctly pointed out towards the suspected malpractices in cricket. There is a clear indications of match fixing in so many game for those who understand cricket. To restore the prestige of this great game. This IPL must be banned immediately.

deccan vs punjab fixed by nba on 18 May 2009

those who watched yesterdays match between punjab and hyderabad were shocked at what happened on the last deliverywith 4 runs to win harris hit the last ball to square leg boundary, where bret lee misfielded and there was easily a possibility of atleast 3 runs. But to everyones shock harris gave up after 2 runs when the non striker had almost reached the end where harris was...well, one can explain this as an instance of foolishness on the part of harris, but what makes the whole thing fishy is the fact that the commentators chose to completely ignore the happenings of the last ball...we just cant dismiss rajastan cheif ministers recent statement that lalit modi is a 'serial match fixer'.

RE: Corruption in IPL by Look before you leap on 16 May 2009

IT might be true, Mr. Miandad, but suggesting something without proof is ridiculous, and that to coming from you. If you are so confident then you surely should be involved in it or atleast know who is as you are related to them, aren't you? Coming from a pakisatni player is obvious as none of Paki players are playing, and you lost the WC hosting rights as well. It comes straight because og jealousy, there is no other reason. I have seem some of the great platers accepting cheating in the game. Mach fixing, ball tempring, wrong catches, and even runing the pitch playing against England. You know very well whom i am talking about. Have you analysed the state of pakistan cricket? if no, then shame on you, if yes, still shame on you because you should be doing something about it instead of muttering crap, just to be in the papers. a request to the medai, please dont publish such crap for the sake of selling you products, it undermines the credibility of the journalism. Regards

Hello miandad! I think the six you hit in Sharjah was fixed..... u just got away bcoz in those days no one even dreamed about match fixing was done by ur Samdi. Anway just concentrate at whats happening to Pak cricketers bcoz of stupid people like U saying without thinking. I do feel pity bcoz there are talented pakistani players who aren't able to show their talent. Just shut up and don't say anything about Indian cricket. Now that Worldcup is taken away from Pakistan what u gonna say??/ Was that fixing too by ICC with India bcoz India can buy even ICC..... just think before you open ur filthy mouth. You were a joker you are a joker but your face doesn't even resemble a joker. U are just pathetic and ignorant and worst cricketer the world of Cricket will ever see. Bcoz of ur comments other cricketers of your country are also looked down upon. For God's sake fold ur comments and keep them safe in your (!). Why don't you start your own cricket league?

What a Clown! by Pichumani on 16 May 2009

Bade Miya, talk about the beam in your stupid Paki eye before you look at the speck in a glorious Indian eye. OK?

ipl match fixing by chand on 16 May 2009

Ofcourse javed miandad should know what he is talking about, being closely related to dawood .

That is your smell by Vikramjit on 16 May 2009

That smell you are getting is your own Mr. Miandad. After all, you are the samdhi of the biggest gangster in South Asia - a terrorist named Dawood Ibrahim who had his hands in the match fixing scandal.

Miandad by jani on 16 May 2009

Why you publish interview of anti-indian people. Miandad is the same guy who married his daughter to Dawood Ibrahim's son, the Most Wanted Person in India. Stop publishing such news. Thanks

Mian Andha D by Jungli on 16 May 2009

Change your name to Mian Andha D. First you are Andha and dont see things as they are and second you are related to D-company of your brothel-in-law. You look like rickshaw puller of charminar. Go change your face and then may be your comments would be more believable.

Nuke em all by shredder on 16 May 2009

Miandad is a jerk by brahminsanskrit on 16 May 2009

Miandad is a jerk - He is married into a terror mastermind's family - he is connected to terrorists -just ban his writings - why the heck is Indian express printing his garbage

Look who is talking by Saurav on 16 May 2009

Miandad knows about match fixing a lot as he on his time have done it a lot, so whenever there is any such situation he always smells the rat. Thats his nature. he always been a controvertial cricketer himself, still remember the incedent with Kiran More where he start jumping, hilarious. So his comment on IPL. His comments are coming only from jealousy as pakisthanis could not anticipate IPL will be a grand success without any Pakisthani Players.

Miandad who? by JavedCricketLeague on 16 May 2009

Who gives a damn what you think Miandad! Take a hike and start your own league in collaboration with the ISI, Taliban and Dawood... This guy is the worst Pakistan has to offer...

Sour Grapes by Manthra on 16 May 2009

Hello Miandad,Say that to your Sambandi Dawood! Ha! Ha! Case of Sour Grapes dude.Wake up to 21st century.

The IPL and match fixing by Padam Singh on 15 May 2009

I am surprised that people realise only now that match fixing could be involved in the IPL matches. Maybe not now but very soon. Modi is in it for money and so are the cricketers. Wouldn't any player want to make more, especially among the lower paid ones. In any case the 20/20 matches are like guli danda and give it a year or two and people will lose interest and the crowds get bored. The true test of a players ability are test matches.

Why are you bothered? by Vidya on 15 May 2009

Even if there is match fixing going on in IPL, why are you bothered Mr Miandad?

You don't need to smell Miyandad you can eat it by Arun on 15 May 2009

You don't need to smell Miyandad you can eat it, you just have to find out from Dawood Ibrahim ( Your son's father in law ) as to put some money on your part also.Every time India will ask to handover this Dawood Ibrahim thing they will say he is not in Pakistan. May be they should ask this Javed Miyandad thing.Pakistan is of the criminal, for the criminal and run by criminals.
