Kolkata, March 23 With Ankur Gattani, who has opted out of placement programmes at IIM-Calcutta this year, the students of the oldest IIM in the country has continued with the trend of giving the much-hyped placements a miss and following their dreams.

Gattani has launched a portal called lifelines.com. “The tool will help people to record one’s autobiography which will be stored privately and shared with selected people,” he said.

“This portal will give me a fulltime job before most of my friends join their jobs,” he added.

Gattani is not alone, as several of his predecessors had also taken the same route.

In 2007, Siddharth Goyal of IIM-Calcutta took up a job in investment banking through campus recruitment.

Towards the end of the course, however, he got busy with launching Kitanebaje.com — a leisure planner. The portal helps one to plan movie outings, reserve restaurant tables and find out the latest events happening in the city, among others.

The portal has also added a section where people can fix appointment with their doctors. Months after launching the portal, Goyal is happy with the response.

“I am looking for venture capitalists to fund the venture,” he said.

Siddharth Shah, a student of the 2006 IIM-Calcutta batch, has launched his fantasy gaming site www.lordsofodds.com in February 2007.

Shah, along with batchmate Hariharan K from IIM-Calcutta and Rajesh Kallidumbil from IIM-Lucknow, launched this gaming site.

The first prototype of the site was tested on students of IIM Calcutta and Lucknow. The version for the common users was launched in February 2008.

“Entreprenuership cannot be taught in class. You have to judge the market situation and grab opportunities,” said Shah.
