Thief held, four vehicles recovered

Mumbai, February 26 The Malad police on Monday arrested Mohammad Junaid Yunus Sheikh (21), an alleged car thief, from near InOrbit mall in Malad.

Nallasopara-based Sheikh had allegedly stolen a number of cars and car parts from various parts of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane.

Deepak Fatangare, police inspector (Crime), said, “I had received information from a source that a notorious car thief was going to be near InOrbit mall with a stolen Toyota Corolla. Based on the information, we laid a trap and nabbed Sheikh in the afternoon.”

The police recovered a number of keys of vehicles from him.

Sheikh admitted to have stolen the car from Juhu. A mobile phone that was found on Sheikh was taken from a vehicle that he had stolen from Malad.

“Further interrogation revealed that Sheikh had been involved in car thefts in various parts of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Vasai. Sheikh had stolen 6 cars from the Malad area, 2 from Kandivli, 3 from Juhu, Bandra and Nagpada, 2 from Kasturba Marg and 1 from Vashi. The stolen cars were of various make — Toyota Corolla, Honda City, Maruti Zen, Maruti Esteem and Maruti 800,” said Fatangare.

According to Fatangare, Sheikh has cases registered against him for stealing cars in areas like Kapurbawdi (Thane), Khar and Mahim.

“Sheikh also sold expensive car music systems and we have recovered Rs 11,11,500 from him. So far, we have recovered four cars from him, including the Toyota Corolla. His modus operandi was to lurk near parking lots and then after a car was parked by the owner, he would use duplicate keys make off with it. He was helped by an associate of his named Anil. We are searching for him,” added Fatangare. Sheikh has been remanded to police custody till March 4.
