Third sense again as Yechury visits JD-U chief

New Delhi In the Third Front season, a visit by CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury to Janata Dal(U) president Sharad Yadav at his Tughlaq Road residence on Sunday fuelled speculation over the future course of the key NDA partner. The meeting attracted instant attention because of the belief—in the backdrop of the Orissa break-up and Maharashtra rumblings—that any ally could walk out on the BJP when the going appears to be tough.

Yechury did not comment on his meeting with Yadav, but made a general comment while speaking to reporters later. “We appeal to all secular and democratic parties to come together in the interest of the country,” he said, leaving it open to interpretation by the media. However, Yadav, seeking to set the developing controversy at rest, told 'The Indian Express': “I am the working convenor of the NDA. I am very much in the NDA and I will continue to be in the NDA.”

The clarification and political alignment aside, the question remained about what the two leaders discussed. Yechury has been of late very active, trying to bring regional players together to build an alternative to both the Congress and the BJP. He played an important role in weaning Orissa Chief Minister and BJD leader Naveen Patnaik away from the BJP.

While Yadav and Yechury reviewed the current political scene, Yadav, according to sources, expressed skepticism about the viability of the third alternative. He is understood to have pointed out to the CPI(M) leaders that no government would be possible without the backing of Congress or the BJP. He expressed his indignation over the denigration of the high office of Prime Minister with leaders of even miniscule parties dreaming of occupying 7, Race Course Road. The JD(U) chief, according to the sources, felt the Left parties would do better by focusing on West Bengal and Kerala and check their own downslide in their strongholds instead of spending all their energy on promoting bit players.

Lest the stance of the JD(U) chief create an impression of everything being hunky dory in the NDA, the fact is that the junior ally is far from being happy over the BJP’s delay in finalising seat adjustments in UP and Jharkhand. The JD(U) has sought three seats in UP and two in Jharkhand. But notwithstanding the tantalizing wait, Yadav has no choice. As the working convenor of the alliance, he has to remain steadfast, swearing by the NDA, no matter who comes calling on him.

Chinese agents out to destroy Indian polity by Indian on 16 Mar 2009

Chinese agents as the Communists are can't be expected to do anything good for the country. The killer of farmers are behaving as if the UPA gov't was their main enemy where as they happily enjoyed power for 4 and half years. The Left has lost its appeal and it is as much responsible for the lacklusture performance of UPA as the Congress party and hence their nautanki must be fittingly replied.

Third sense by Aravind on 16 Mar 2009

Mr. Yechuri should make it clear as to how SECULAR THE COMMIS ARE when they are competing to field a 'chosen' muslim candidate from Ponnani in Kerala. Is this what they call secular? Did they not have any functing party members in this area to contest poll?

No more experiments please by shyam kishore on 16 Mar 2009

India will go in the Path of current day Pakistan if we elect the 3rd front . 3rd front is nothing but a pack of opportunistic politicians who are ready to sleep with any for their personal gains .We need a stable government . elect either BJP or Congress for that matter

Foolish Communists by Amit Purohit on 16 Mar 2009

SitaRam Yechury is an opportunist like all communists. They are reluctant day dreamers who are ranked anti nationals and are top order anti Hindus under the veil of anti Brahmins / Anti Baniyas. In fact they end being anti nationals on payrolls of China and Russia and even Maoists. He thinks like his mentor late fool Hakishan Singh, that they are axis of all movements. Mr Sharad Yadav is wise and correct to tell that at present no government can be formed without NDA or UPA. This poaching activity will be seen on 16 May when BJD will loose in the state, with Patnaik crying or licking BJP’s feet. And communists will be overall losers’ in both states they are ruling.I wish my countrymen from Bengal and Kerala to throw these thugs out of power by power of ballot, once and for all. Look around from whole of the world they have lost and to survive changed their color to be called as communists.

Elect either BJP or Congress by balakrishnan on 16 Mar 2009

Mr. Sitaram Yechury, the new 'Sakhuni Mam' after the 'late Harkishan Singh Surjeet' is doing the job very well. This he knows very well that the LEFT will not win more than 30 seats in total this time and will have no face to see the UPA. So the old tactics of late old man the CPM tries to form a third front. People knows this third front will lost maximum 1 year. By the time, CPM will try to gain their lost ground and ditch all the other partners of third front. So the people of India should either elect either BJP or Congress in majority, not just majority with their allies then only we will have good governance and good opposition. Also, it will send very strong signal to our enemies of borders and insideer not to indulge in any activities against our Nation.

SHARAD YADAV REJECTS YECHURY'S THIRD FRONT OFFER... CHANGE THE CAPTION, INDIAN EXPRESS. by ANIYAN on 16 Mar 2009

SHARAD YADAV REJECTS THIRD FRONT'S OFFER.... THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE CAPTION OF THE FAILED ATTEMPT OF SITARAM YECHURY, RATHER THAN MAKING ALL THIS EFFORTS BY INDIAN EXPRESS !! MANY NATIONAL AND REGIONAL NEWSPAPERS DID IT.

Wiping CPM by Bijoy on 16 Mar 2009

CPM should concentrate in their stronghold in Bengal and Kerala. Because, this time they would obviously be wiped out of these two state. Once their strength in the number of MP reduces, they will forget about spliting other's houses. They will also forget about formation of 3rd front, because, very shortly they will disappear from the forefront of national politics. One should not forget their role in supporting the UPA, they kept mum on price hike, they failed to fulfill their commitment for increasing the PF interest rate from 9.5%, rather during their tenure, the interest rate has been reduced to 8.5%, which every sensitive voter remembers and would give a befitting reply for such failure.
