This Goa village doesn’t know Hindu-Christian hatred

Panaji, October 8: Even as neighbouring Karnataka is burning in the heat of communal violence, a nondescript Goa village has set an example of brotherhood and secularism.

Youths belonging to Hindu and Christian communities in Loliem village, four km from the Goa-Karnataka border and 90 km from Panaji, came together to clean a century-old Hindu crematorium, which was in a dilapidated state over the years.

"We really do not know why this (violence) is happening in Karnataka. We are a small community. We are cut off from the rest of the region because of the remoteness," Peter Fernandes, a villager, said.

A group of 25 youths, all in their mid-20s, took up the task of cleaning the crematorium, covered by debris and shrubs, and completed the work in one day, he said.

"We wanted to do this on Gandhi Jayanti but somehow we could not, hence we did it on Sunday (October 5)," said Raju Bandekar, who took part in the exercise.

However, initially the youths were not fired by the zeal to set an example of communal harmony. But a trip to the crematorium after the death of an elderly villager set them thinking.

"The other day we had come here to cremate one of our elderly villager. We were shocked after seeing the condition of the crematorium. All of us then thought why not clean it up ourselves," Elvis Fernandes, another villager, said.

DEceitful christian conversions by suchay on 27 Oct 2008

dear frnds, hinduism never coverts other religions as there is no conversion procedure prescrbed in vedas and other sacred texts of hinduism.AS SWAMI VIVEKANANDA IN HIS FAMOUS SPEECH AT CHICAGO SAID ON BEHALF OF HINDUISM "I BELONG TO A REIGION WHICH HAS TAUGHT THE WORLD BOTH TOLERANCE AND UNIVERSAL ACCEPTANCE" I ADVICE EVERY CHRISTIAN TO READ SWAMI VIVEKANANDA WORKS ALONG WITH THEIR SACRED BIBLE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT RELIGION IS AND HW IS IT TO BE ACHIEVED AND STOP WASTING TIME IN UR CONVERSION ACTIVITIES. CHRISTIANITY IS A WAY TO REACH GOD LIKE HINDUISM AND MANY OTHER WAYS NO IS NO SPECIAL IN CHRISTIANITY IT IS LIKE OTHER RELIGIONS...TO UNDERSTAND BETTER ABOUT HINDUISM I ADVICE SINCERELY TO READ LIFE AND WRKS OF SWAMI VIVEKANANDA....DEAR CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

This Goa village doesn't know Hindu Christian hatred by Naveen Prabhu on 21 Oct 2008

Is it in the interest of all that christians convert or only the upper caste hindus so they get a new lower caste to torture as they have done with the dalits and still doing for centuries. Be it known that Christ came to save and not to condemn or convert He never asks your caste or your religion. People should have a choice to follow their religion. Do not make India a Saudi Arabia Mr narain Ktaria

This Goa village doesn’t know Hindu-Christian hatred by Narain Ktaria on 10 Oct 2008

It is good thing to know that Hindu and Christian boys are working in harmony in Goa. Before converting to Christianity, all these people were Hindus. They were converted to Christianity by Portueguez. Now Christian rule over India is gone. It will be in the interest of all if all Christians who look like other Indians should come back home. Hindus should welcome them with dignity and honor.

SHINE INDIA SHINE by Anthony on 09 Oct 2008

'I AM A PROUD INDIAN'. No matter to what religion I belong, the fact remains that first I was born in this great country. Today, as we see and hear all this violence between differenct communities. "Friends today and enemies tomorrow" is what is taking shape in society. Please, I humbly request to you my dear people of India, please be considerate and careing to one another. This world has seen enough bloodshed and voilence. Let us prove that India is the greatest country. Tolerant and Peace loving. Treating all its citizens equally and with justice. May every person feel proud and happy. Let us devote more time to spread hapiness and share with our less fortunate fellow brothers. In doing so let us make INDIA one of the greatest nations on earth.Request all Leaders and those in power to promote peace and harmony to MOTHER INDIA.GOD BLESS OUR COUNTRY INDIA.

Karnataka by Sri on 09 Oct 2008

What happened in Karnataka has its own reasons (a book named Satya Darshini degrading Hindu faith and Gods) published and what happened in Orissa (Hindi Swamijis killing) has its own reasons as everyone knows. Whatever is happening in Goa is good and it has its own reasons. The truth is when you do good all people are with you and when you do bad even God is against you. Just remember that. Don't resort to conversion of Hindus like the missionaries or kill the Hindus like the jihadis, then the Hindus will tolerate you. We are basically very tolerant other wise there won't be so many Xtians and muslims living in this country.

Misleading title by Jaya on 09 Oct 2008

The title of this column is highly irritating and misleading. There is NO hindu-christian hatred in India. The Goan village is not special. Karnataka is NOT burning. A few churches were stoned; damage was minimal.Catholic churches were not harmed at all. They are not involved in conversion. Politicians and the media is responsible. Any christian reading this article will automatically assume that christians are targeted everywhere and will feel aggrieved. the hindus who don't know the truth will feel guilty and thus resentful. Please show more responsibility while writing news.

Religious repsect is a two way thing. You get what you give. by Ayyappa on 09 Oct 2008

The fundamental principle for secularism to thrive is mutual respect of religions. If some religion is trying to grow at the expense of another problems are bound to happen. The casue of all problems is Christians are degrading and insulting our gods, customs and practises. Stop doing that all problems will disappear. Coversion is the root cause. Hidus of this land are magnanimous to allow you to have equal right compared to some other countries. Dont misuse that previlage.

Karnataka is not burning by Mrs. Nirupama Kumar on 09 Oct 2008

While it is true that there have been attacks on churches in Karnataka which is reprehensible, these have been stray incidents. To say that 'Karnataka is burning in the heat of communal violence' is completely false and irresponsible reporting. Kindly do not exaggerate and spread rumours.

Hinduchristian by Mathew on 09 Oct 2008

Hi to all,My name is Mathew Abraham, I am born to a very old christian family in India. My christian community have been living in India for 2000 years harmoniously with Hindus. But whenEuropean Christians Came to India year 1500s,they forced us to convert to their Christianity and wanted to destroy our Indian traditions because our practice have elements of Hindu traditions.the option was convert or die, many were converted by force and and many were not ready to convert even with force but die, my great great parents were among hundreds of people were gathered and ready to die to protest against the conversion, that protest became very powerful and thousands of people were joined. so European Christian changed the strategy. We are still alive as Indian Christians rooted in India having traditions of Hindus. Many Hindu families are still involved to complete our christian traditions. The 3 kings(wise men) went to give gifts to infant jesus were from India so they must be Hindus.

Converted by Paul Gandhi on 08 Oct 2008

I was approached by Christian Missionaries to convert. They are ready to pay me. What I dont understand is why Pope wants more Christians? For Power? For his empire to grow? India should ban Pope like China did. There is no role for guys like him in this country. Mr. Prime Minister do you have guts to take care of your majority population and stop being a puppet of others like Sonia. Shame on you. What good it does when you are well educated Ph.D. but a puppet in the hands of Christian Sonia. Psuedo so called Fathers of Christianity...stop the hatret. Stop what you did to Muslims in Spain and other places..or American Indians or Mayans in Mexico. Your religion is full of racism.

Hindu-Missionary hatred by Eternal Truth on 08 Oct 2008

There is no such thing as hindu-christian hatred. What all we are seeing is hindu-missionary hatred. As long as missionaries are not trying to convert hindus, there are no issues among hindus and christians, whatsoever.

Ideals of Great Souls by Puneet on 08 Oct 2008

What did Jesus do? What did Mother Teresa do? What did Lord Rama do? What did Lord Krishna do? Jesus loved everyone, asked Almighty to forgive even his tormentors. Mother Teresa also saw Jesus in every deprived human being. Lord Rama loved everyone, even when he went to Ayodhaya he appealed Ravana to agree to apeaceful solution. Kriishna too first sought peaceful solution to the conflict between Pandavas and Kauravas. What did Mahatma Gandhi do? He felt so much for the deprived that he not only helped them but started wearing clothes like them. Then look at Dr Hedgewar's and Guriji Golwalkar's philosophy: They too said that the first and foremost is the Unity between all Indians - irrespective of caste, creed and religion and sought uniform rights without preference for anybody. Lives of all great men is based on love and respect... Are we their followers - Let us introspect and live upto the ideals set by these people...

This is partial secloolarism, for full secloolarism convert crematorium to graveyard by Holly Joosus on 08 Oct 2008

Kudos to the christian brothers of Goa for their great example of secloolarism. However remember that only path to Heaven is through Joosus Kriste. Hence, Crematorium can only lead to hell, you have to send people to graveyards to establish the Kingdom of Godd on Earth where he rules on Graves and bring back the believers to life. Hence for true secloolarism you must harvest the souls of misguided unbelievers, and also plant churches and establish graveyards. In fact Goa must become a huge church-graveyard complex where all believers can RIP.

"secloolarism" by udayan on 09 Oct 2008

here we go , folks, back to square one,, sigh,, holly joosus's thoughts are as twisted as the words used! clearly these are the kind of people who are at the root of communal strife, on all sides. may 'joosus' grant this person some wisdom!

Unite you all Indians by Tony Barretto on 08 Oct 2008

We need to spread love and respect for every religion, rather than destroying religious places due to personal motives. Off late, Christian have been targets in their own land due to some fanatics. No religion speaks of violence and hatredness but it is man who exploits it for his selfish dreams. Lets not get misguided and divide our country by relgion due to miscreants such as Bajrang dal etc. Catholic missionaries have contributed immensely towards literacy and helping the sick. Be proud to be Indian due to its diversity.

Karnataka is not burning. Pl do not spread false and mischivious news which will is not good for the society. A few stone throwing incidents did happened and they r thing of past for the people but for the politicians and those who ve taken the cotnract of teaching secularism to the nation are still crying foul of it and there by trying to reignite the fire which as doused long age. Pl stop this kind of reporting for heaven sake

Goa village does'nt know Hindu-Christian.. by Ashok on 08 Oct 2008

Violence against any religion is deplorable but I am afraid, it is not going to end. Christian missionaries in Orrissa, Karnataka, Tamilnadu , Gujarat and elsewhere do indulge in aggressive conversion activities and there is blatant involvement of aggressive foreign evangelist groups. Our so called secular media tries to conceal these facts, and a Central Government indirectly headed by person of Catholic upbringing turns a blind eye to the activities of these Christian evangelists. The majority community is slowly beginning to realise and likes of Bajarang Dal are inclined to take law into their own hands. Government may ban such groups but their are good chances that the present ruling coalition will be shown the door at next general election if current level of miniority appeasement continues. Communal harmony shown by Goa villagers is admirable but such instances will become rarer and rarer.

Religion by Peter Fernandes on 08 Oct 2008

Religion is a believe. All religions are preaching the same concepts which leads to peace and harmony among the human beings. Therefore, there should not be any foreceable conversion and at the same time nobody should be stopped following any religion of his own choice. All religions are having the same fundamentals. It is only one's perception towards a particular religion. People should be allowed to believe any religion which they prefer but at the same time respect others' regilion too. If everyone start believing that there is only one regligion which they believe, then there will be no end to the violence.

In Goa we are GOANS first, then Hindus, Christians, Muslims. by Antonio Carvalho on 08 Oct 2008

In Goa we always consider ourselves first as GOANS and then as Hindus, Christians, Muslims. This has been our tradition and we value our culture. We live like GOANS and not mix the religion. Congratulations to Loliem youth, keep up the good work. Long live Goa, Long live GOEMKARS.

Goans by Sam on 09 Oct 2008

Christians in Goa seems to have the Goan inquisition perpetrated by the Portugese Catholic Church. Goans were forcibly converted in the 16th century and the Christians continue to do so. Deceit has now replaced brute force.

Very true by Norman on 08 Oct 2008

There are so many Families like mine, who have let Hindus stay in their houses, and now they own them, only by virtue of taking care and living in the house for years. We have not shunted them out.Remember all 5 fingers are not the same. We only have to filter out the trouble makers.

first goans then hindu......... by VK Chugh on 08 Oct 2008

when i was 10 yrs old i never noticed any thing like hindu-muslim-sikh-goans-christians-tamilians, it was in 1957. Today i have grown alongwith this nation of 61 yrs of age, it is your turn to say...we are first goans, then hindu...after how many years you will say the other way? God only knows. Why conversions? Are christians any better human beings? In Orrisa killers of that swami is the christian and the reason given is 'he did not stop reconversions' after warnings.do you know what it means? Any comment-anybody?

only 1% or less people fight by ashok pai on 08 Oct 2008

given the size of India, there are very few people who are actually affected, but the media never puts this into perspective. christians in mangalore were not prosecuted like in gujurat, but the media played into the hands of secular forces to create a bogey - just like how bajrang dal choses to create demons. why play into the hands of either parties. people are largely peaceful, its only when politicians, goondas, bajrang dal or like, missionaries and like get into the act that they create imbalance in society.

Conversions by Mathew k George on 08 Oct 2008

Infact more Christians are being converted to Hinduisom in the world than Hindus to Christians.

Conversion by The Hindu World on 09 Oct 2008

Surprised to see Mr Mathew's version on conversion. I do not know from where on earth he got the fact that Christians are been converted to Hinduism. It is true that more people are been converted from Christians to other religion such as Muslim(US and South America) and Buddhism (Australia/New Zealand). Unfortunately our media is only after the minority, unfortunately those are narrow minded people who look for topic. They do not want to cover corruption or terrorism because they scared of their life where as politicians do not have back bone to react hence media is after them.

just answer my question? by krishnan on 08 Oct 2008

when it comes to conversion to relgions... christanity comes to mind.. and when terrorism comes.. only islam.. i repeat - nobody is saying when terror attacks happens, any christian name appears and conversion comes no muslim name comes. so, things are black and white... my fellow friends.. understand the truth nothing but the naked truth

just answer my question? by Suresh on 08 Oct 2008

AR Rahman- the music director is the classic example. The issue is what is the objective of missionaries.Let the missionaries do missionary activities and not conversion.
